The OC Supertones is a Christian ska punk band from Orange County , California ( USA ). OC stands for Orange County , but mostly the band is referred to as Supertones for the sake of simplicity . It was active from 1995 to 2005. They reunited in 2010 before finally announcing their end in 2017. The Supertones were one of the first internationally known ska bands on the Christian music scene and with over a million records sold, they were also the most commercially successful.

Band history

In the early 1990s, Matt "Mojo" Morginsky, Jason Carson and Tony Terusa formed a band called Saved while they were still in junior high school , which eventually became The Orange County Supertones in 1995 with an expanded line-up . After being signed by Tooth & Nail Records , their first album, Adventures of the OC Supertones , was released in 1996 , which was nominated for the GMA Dove Award in 1997 in the "Alternate / Modern Rock" category. Her second album, Supertones Strike Back , reached number 3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and number 2 on the Top Christian Albums chart and was a milestone on the way to international recognition. The next two albums, Chase the Sun and Loud and Clear landed both on the Billboard 200 , the world's most important album charts. In December 2004 they announced a temporary breakup of the group after their tour for the end of 2005. In 2010 they celebrated their reunification and in 2012 released their last album so far, For the Glory . In March 2017 they finally announced the final breakup of the group. In their farewell concert on June 3, 2017, they played the album Supertones Strike Back , released in 1997, for the 20th anniversary . The show was broadcast live on Facebook and recorded for CD / DVD release soon.

Music genre

The Supertones have played a key role in developing and shaping the Christian Ska scene (especially in the USA, but also beyond) since the mid-1990s. Together with Five Iron Frenzy and The Insyderz , they were among the first internationally known Christian ska bands. While the first two works were still classic ska-punk with a strong influence from rap and hip-hop , from the third album onwards they also opened up to other influences such as reggae , rock and praise & worship .
