Austra is a three - piece Canadian new wave band that was formed in Toronto in 2010 around the singer-songwriter Katie Stelmanis . The name of the band refers to the goddess of light in Latvian mythology .

history

The trained in classical singing Stelmanis (vocals, keyboards) and Maya Postepski (drums) were members of the band Galaxy . Together with Dorian Wolf, the bassist from Spiral Beach , they performed under the name Private Life . Since another band claimed the name, the three musicians renamed themselves to Stelmanis' middle name Austra.

The band's debut album was released on May 13, 2011 and received positive reviews in the music press. In July 2011 it was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize .

The second studio album Olympia was released in June 2013, the third album Future Politics in January 2017, the fourth album HiRUDiN in May 2020.
