The Pratersauna is a house , electro and techno club at Waldsteingartenstrasse 135 in Vienna's 2nd district Leopoldstadt , which opened in July 2009.

history

The sauna in Vienna's Prater , next to the exhibition center , was opened in 1965. It became a meeting place for the "semi-public", for example the Russian mafia is said to have met there, and at times the place served as a swingers club . This gave the Pratersauna a dirty corner image that it could not get rid of; apart from a small regular audience, the guests stayed away despite several attempts to revive the sauna.

At the end of 2008 the Pratersauna was closed. In 2009 the marketing entrepreneur Hennes Weiss and the real estate developer Stefan Hiess became the new tenants of the sauna, which has hardly changed after 45 years. They subjected the building to a general renovation and converted it into a club with a bar. There have been two terraces since then. In the summer, barbecues take place outside on weekends and the pool is open, further modifications and extensions or renovation work were planned. The new Pratersauna opened in July 2009.

At the end of 2015 it was announced that the Pratersauna would close at the beginning of 2016 and will reopen in March 2016 following a takeover by the Dots Group with owner Martin Ho. The last event before the closure took place on January 30, 2016. The reopening after a revitalization, during which, among other things, the garden was enlarged, took place on April 29, 2016.

Events

From the beginning there was the weekly house and electro event series Praterei (addition: educated underground dance music ), in which, in addition to international guests (such as Motor City Drum Ensemble , Praterei # 13) and residents such as Kido Soon , willFling, felix “ BNCKD “leader and Rainer Klang local producers of electronic music and DJs around labels like Affine Records ( Ogris Debris , JSBL , Dorian Concept , The Clonious and others) or collectives like The Loud Minority and Prater Unser perform and make the club a center of young Viennese ( Deep ) house and ( Detroit ) techno scene.

Press

The readers of the Berlin music magazine DeBug voted the Pratersauna the second best club in 2010. The editorial team of the magazine said: "With the high-flyer Pratersauna, we would even dare the gentle thesis that Vienna will become the new Berlin in the next millennium." The Gap magazine praised the atmosphere, bouncers and charm of the club on the three-year anniversary.
