Timo Novotny (* 1973 in Böblingen ) is an Austrian filmmaker and photographer .

Life and work

Novotny studied from 1994 to 2000 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Peter Weibel Visual Media Design and graduated with honors. Since 1997 he has been working as a freelance artist in the fields of photography and film.

His first short film Wirehead (with Norbert Pfaffenbichler , 1996) was shown at around 30 international film festivals and received several awards (including the ZKM Media Art Prize in Karlsruhe ).

In 1999 Cargo was made , a short film as an extended symbiosis of three music videos for the Sofa Surfers , which was shown at around 35 film festivals and received several awards. At Sofa Surfers, Novotny has been responsible for the artwork such as record and CD covers, as well as the music videos and projections for live shows since then . He has been a member of the band since Sofa Surfers - The Red Album 2005.

In 2006 Novotny completed his first feature film with Life In Loops - A Megacities Rmx . The film is a remix of Michael Glawogger's documentary Megacities and was the first film remix to make it back into arthouse cinemas as a 35 mm version , was shown at over 60 film festivals and was awarded five prizes. Among other things, the film was honored as “Best Documentary” at the A-Festival Karlovy Vary International Film Festival . He has also taken part in the film festivals Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata , Sidney IFF , Singapore International Film Festival , Kraków Film Festival , Festival dei Popoli Florence, Hot Docs Toronto and Film Festival Ghent . In 2012 he presented his second feature documentary Trains of Thoughts (premiere at IFF Karlovy Vary).

In addition to the music videos for Sofa Surfers, he also produced others for Wolfgang Frisch , I-Wolf , Markus Kienzl , Bauchklang and Katika . His cover artwork was exhibited worldwide with the mobile design exhibition "Design Now Austria" and the experimental video Neon (with Nik Thoenen , 2002) was included in the collection of the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. Novotny's work has been represented in group exhibitions at the following festivals, among others: Viper (Basel), Sónar (Barcelona), Vienna Independent Shorts (Vienna), Ars Electronica (Linz), Biennale di Venezia (9th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, Venice) and at the ACF New York . His only solo exhibition so far was at the KBB in Barcelona. So far he has worked as curator at the transcinema festival in San Francisco, the Cimatics Festival in Brussels and the Les Rencontres Audiovisuelles in Lille.

He has performed live (see VJ ) with the Sofa Surfers and in individual projects of the band members in 27 countries, including at ACF New York, at the 41st and 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, at the 33rd IFF Ghent and in the Arsenal art area in Nizhny Novgorod . In 2003 he opened the Cinedays in Brussels, in 2007 the IndieLisboa festival in Portugal with a live remix of Life in Loops and in 2012 the Austrian pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia, 13th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, with the live premiere of Trains of Thoughts .

In Austria he performed at the Urban Art Forms Festival in Wiesen (with GusGus ), at the Klangturm in St. Pölten (1997), the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz (1999), the Ars Electronica (1997 and 2003), with Heimo Zobernigs "Black box" in the casino in Schwarzenbergplatz (2003), the opening of the Donaufestival 2005 in Korneuburg, the opening of the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna (2008), in the Vienna Burgtheater (2009) and with the visualization of Hugo Wolf's Italian songbook (2010 ) on.
