Otto von Hügel

Eugen Otto Baron Hill (* 20th September 1853 in Stuttgart , † 4. January 1928 in Nonnenau ) was a württembergischer General of Infantry in the First World War .

Life

origin

He was the son of the later Württemberg Colonel Albert Ferdinand von Hügel (1809-1884). His grandfather was the Württemberg Lieutenant General and Minister of War Ernst von Hügel (1774–1849).

Military career

Hügel attended high school in his hometown and a private institute in Ludwigsburg. He graduated from 20 September 1868 to 20 July 1870 as a cadet the military school Ludwigsburg and then joined as a cadet in the 4th Infantry Regiment, later Fusilier Regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" (4 Württembergisches ) No. 122 , of the Württemberg Army . With this he took part in the Franco-German War and was promoted to Second Lieutenant on December 30, 1870 .

In the further course of his military career, Hügel was commander of the 2nd division from August 18, 1908 to April 1, 1912 . He was then put up for disposition while simultaneously conferring the character of General of the Infantry .

With the outbreak of the First World War, hill was reactivated and initially used as deputy commanding general of the XIII. (Royal Württemberg) Army Corps . On August 25, 1914, he was then appointed General Command of the newly established XXVI. Reserve Corps appointed, which he u. a. commanded in the First Battle of Flanders . On August 28, 1916, he received the highest Prussian bravery award, the Pour le Mérite, and on February 20, 1918, the Commander's Cross of the Württemberg Military Merit Order for his services on the Western Front .

On March 6, 1918, Hügel was relieved of his post and retired. In recognition of his many years of service, he received the crown for the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick with Swords from his sovereign, and the Order of the Red Eagle, 1st class with swords, from Wilhelm II .
