Ernst Eugen Freiherr von Hügel (born March 26, 1774 in Ludwigsburg , † March 30, 1849 in Kirchheim unter Teck ) was a Württemberg general and minister of war.

Life

Huegel was the son of the Württemberg military master craftsman Johann Andreas von Hügel (born August 1, 1734 in Strasbourg ; † August 1, 1807 in Stuttgart ) , who was raised to the status of imperial baron . The father's family name was originally Lux . The family name von Hügel was adopted when it was adopted by Colonel Johann Theobald von Hügel. Ernst von Hügel joined his father's regiment in the Württemberg army in 1785 and took part in the campaigns from 1792 to 1800 . In 1806 he was promoted to major and in 1807 rose within six months to quartermaster general- lieutenant. In 1809 he was involved in the battles of Abensberg , Landeshut , Eggmühl , Aspern and Wagram . From these battles he returned as major general.

In the Battle of Smolensk , Hügel stormed the two suburbs of Smolensk with the 1st Infantry Brigade on August 17 and 18, 1812 . In the Battle of Borodino he captured the withdrawn left wing. 1815 was Hill Military Commissioner in the headquarters of Wellington . During the peace negotiations he was appointed envoy of the Kingdom of Württemberg to the allied monarchs in Paris .

In 1816 Hügel was appointed lieutenant general and at the same time vice president of the war department. In 1817 he became President of the War Council. Between 1829 and 1842 he headed the Württemberg War Ministry . During this time he was also a member of the Privy Council . From 1819 until his death, he was an appointed lifelong member of the Chamber of Class Lords in the Württemberg state parliament .

Ernst von Hügel was a Protestant and had four marriages, from which numerous children emerged. Before 1799 he married Caroline von Rosenberg, this marriage remained childless and was divorced in 1799. In his second marriage, he was married from December 29, 1802 to Freiin Wilhelmine Schott von Schottenstein († July 4, 1805). The couple had two children:

  • Albert (born September 30, 1803, † December 31, 1865), Lord of Eschenau near Weinsberg and Chamberlain of Württemberg,
  • Karl Eugen (* May 24, 1805 † May 29, 1870), Württemberg Foreign Minister

In his third marriage on April 8, 1806, he married Luise Ernestine von Gemmingen-Guttenberg (* 1782; † February 28, 1834), the couple had several children:

In his fourth marriage on April 28, 1835, he married Elisabeth von Gemmingen-Guttenberg (* October 2, 1789; † 1859) widow of Johann Friedrich Cotta and sister of his third wife. The Hügel family had considerable fortunes based on the estate of some relatives who had worked for the Dutch East India Company .
