The Ludwigsburg War School was an army officer training institute in Ludwigsburg during the time of the Kingdom of Württemberg . It was established by royal order of June 23, 1820 and dissolved by royal order on March 30, 1874 . The War School was subordinate to the Quartermaster General , later to the War Ministry of the Kingdom . She was in the rear Castle Street (today Montbéliard Street) 24 in the later building of the district commands Ludwigsburg, later regimental staff of the Infantry Regiment 15 of the Reichswehr .

history

The city of Ludwigsburg emerged at the beginning of the 18th century when the largest undestroyed Baroque palace in Germany was built under Duke Eberhard Ludwig von Württemberg . In 1800, Württemberg was occupied by France under Napoleon Bonaparte and forced into an alliance with France. In 1806, Elector Friedrich accepted the dignity of King of Württemberg, bestowed by Napoleon. In 1812 the Württemberg army was set up in Ludwigsburg for Napoleon's Russian campaign . Only a few hundred of the original contingent of 15,800 Württemberg soldiers returned from this campaign.

In 1805 a cadet institute was founded in the garrison town . The institute was tasked with training young men over the age of 16 to become officers in a four-year course in military-technical and scientific subjects . This cadet institute was dissolved again in 1817. However, in order to provide for the next generation of officers in good time, a Württemberg "officer training institute" was set up three years later. The organization took place according to the suggestions of the Quartermaster General Ferdinand Freiherr Varnbüler von und zu Hemmingen .

In 1852 the officer's training institute was officially renamed the War School. As part of a reorganization, the war school combined the facilities of a Prussian cadet school and a Prussian war school. The aim was the practical and technical training of officer candidates of all branches of service who were required to attend a war school before being admitted to the officer examination. Attending the war school was preceded by a period of service with the troops . The curriculum of the war school included tactics , army organization, weapons theory, fortification theory, terrain theory and recording with plan drawing, military business style and service knowledge. In addition, the students were trained in drills , shooting, gymnastics , fencing and horse riding.
