August von Rüpplin

Karl August Freiherr von Rüpplin von und zu Keffikon (born November 28, 1797 on board a British ship off Portoferraio , Elba ; † August 26, 1867 in Tarasp , Graubünden ) was a Württemberg Lieutenant General and Minister of War .

Life

Rüpplin was the son of a Swiss officer. His younger brother Theodor Joseph von Rüpplin (1798–1873) was a colonel and councilor in the canton of Thurgau . In 1807 Rüpplin joined the Württemberg army as a cadet . In 1813 he reached the rank of lieutenant in the cavalry and took part in the Wars of Liberation until 1815 . In April 1816 he was transferred to the staff of the Quartermaster General. From 1822 to 1830 he worked as governor of Prince Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen . With this he also visited the universities in Tübingen , Göttingen and Berlin . In September 1835 Rüpplin became adjutant to King Wilhelm and soon afterwards was promoted to major . In the years 1836 and 1837 he was an authorized representative of the Württemberg Army at the Bundestag in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1839 he was head of the Secret War Chancellery. In 1840 he rose to lieutenant colonel and in 1842 to colonel. From June 24, 1848 to October 28, 1849, Rüpplin headed the War Ministry as major general .

His own request for release was granted in the fall of 1849. He won a mandate for the First State Constitutional Assembly , which met from December 1 to December 22, 1849. He was then retired until 1857, but was reactivated in 1857 and took command of the 3rd Infantry Brigade in Ludwigsburg. In 1863 he went to the federal inspection in Berlin. In March 1865 the new King Karl appointed him his first adjutant and promoted him to lieutenant general . In 1867, as government commissioner, he attended the inauguration of the monument to the Württemberg soldiers who had fallen in the battles near Tauberbischofsheim the year before.

Rüpplin was involved as a board member of the Württemberg Art Association and as President of the Württemberg Disability Foundation.

Rüpplin was married to Emma (1807–1881), the daughter of senior government councilor Rudolf von Kleiner in the Württemberg Ministry of the Interior. The marriage had three children.
