The 52nd Infantry Brigade (2nd Royal Württemberg) was a large unit of the Württemberg Army .

history

The large association was set up on March 31, 1817 as the 3rd Infantry Brigade in Ludwigsburg . After the founding of the empire, it was renamed the 2nd Infantry Brigade on November 22, 1871, but on December 18 of the same year it was renamed the 52nd Infantry Brigade (2nd Royal Württembergische). The brigade was part of the 26th Division of the XIII. (Royal Württemberg) Army Corps in Stuttgart and their were the infantry regiment "Alt-Württemberg" (3rd Württemberg) No. 121 in Ludwigsburg and the fusilier regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" (4th Württembergisches) No. 122 in Heilbronn and Mergentheim (2nd Battalion).

The command was in Ludwigsburg and the district commands in Leonberg , Ludwigsburg, Hall and Heilbronn were assigned to it.

German war

In the war against Prussia in 1866, the brigade took part in the battles near Tauberbischoffsheim and Gerchsheim as part of the 1st Division in the VIII Army Corps of the German Confederation .

Franco-German War

As part of the field division, the brigade was involved in the battles at Wörth and Sedan as well as the enclosure and siege of Paris in 1870/71 during the war against France .

First World War

At the beginning of the First World War , the brigade took part in the formation of the 26th Division and the 5th Army on the western front . In the Battle of Longwy on August 22, 1914, the brigade suffered heavy losses from flank fire from the French 4th Corps. After a short assignment to the 4th Army , the 26th Division and the 52nd Infantry Brigade were transferred to the 6th Army on the newly established front in Flanders in October 1914 . Here the brigade again suffered heavy losses when trying to work its way up to the enemy positions in the Fromelles area. At the end of November 1914, the brigade, like the entire 26th Division, was relocated to the northern eastern front, where it was deployed until it was disbanded on May 26, 1915. The Infantry Regiment "Alt-Württemberg" (3rd Württembergisches) No. 121 transferred to the 51st Infantry Brigade (1st Royal Württembergische) . The Fusilier Regiment "Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, King of Hungary" (4th Württembergisches) No. 122 came to the 209th Infantry Brigade of the newly established 105th Division .
