Norbert Pfaffenbichler

Norbert Pfaffenbichler (born April 26, 1967 in Steyr ) is an Austrian artist, filmmaker and curator .

Life and work

Norbert Pfaffenbichler attended the vocational school for disabled education and social professions of the Evangelical Diakoniewerk Gallneukirchen and initially worked as a disabled person in Vienna from 1989 to 1993 . From 1992 he studied theater studies and journalism at the University of Vienna until he was accepted at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1994 . There he studied visual media design with Peter Weibel . Since completing his studies in 2001, he has been working as a freelance artist and curator in Vienna.

Pfaffenbichler's experimental short films are characterized on the one hand by mathematical abstraction and on the other hand by an artistic examination of the early history of cinema. His films, on which he worked several times with Lotte Schreiber , among others , are distributed by the Austrian film distributor sixpackfilm . The most important international festival participations include the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata and the Venice Film Festival as well as the Edinburgh IFF , the Hamburg Short Film Festival , the Oberhausen Short Film Festival , the IFFR Rotterdam and the Tampere ISFF . In Austria Pfaffenbichler's films have been shown regularly at Crossing Europe , Diagonale , Vienna Independent Shorts and Viennale . In 2009 Vienna Independent Shorts dedicated a tribute program to him and Lotte Schreiber. Pfaffenbichler also produced stage videos, participated in performances and took part in numerous exhibitions.

As a curator, Pfaffenbichler compiled the annual Austrian Abstracts series for Diagonale from 1999 to 2001 . In 1999 he founded the label lanolin, which until 2004 distributed Austrian experimental films by Karø Goldt , Billy Roisz and Michaela Schwentner , among others . Pfaffenbichler has also curated film programs several times for the Kunstverein Medienturm Graz , the Austrian Film Museum and sixpackfilm.
