Afikim , rarely also Afiqim ( Hebrew אֲפִיקִים Afīqīm ), is a kibbutz in northern Israel. It is located three kilometers from the Sea of Galilee and had 1,494 inhabitants in 2018.
The kibbutz is one of the first kibbutzim of the kibbutz movement and was built by predominantly Russian immigrants. Today the kibbutz is one of the three largest in the country.
etymology
The name Afikim means river valleys and refers to the Jordan and its tributary, the Jarmuk .
history
Russian Jews who were in the Golan Heights as part of the Hashomer Hatzair kibbutz movement established the Afikim kibbutz in 1932. Due to the special location in one of the most fertile parts of Israel, the kibbutz attracted more and more members and quickly became one of the largest kibbutzim in the country.
During the Palestine War in 1948, the kibbutz was often used as a base against Iraqi and Syrian shelling. The kibbutz was also a major representative of the Palmach activity . Shortly afterwards the kibbutz was a training camp for Nachal , the fighting pioneer youth. The kibbutz soon became a supporter of the Zionist labor party "Mifleget Poalei Eretz Israel", nicknamed Mapai .
In 1977 the kibbutz housed 66 refugees from the Vietnam War . The entire corporate structure of the kibbutz was completely privatized in 2004.
economy
The agriculture of the kibbutz involves the cultivation of bananas, dates, citrus fruits, and some other tropical fruits. In addition to growing fruit, Afikim has 400 dairy cows.
The electronics company SAE is responsible for the production of so-called Kalno'im (electric vehicles) and is one of the largest suppliers in this area on the world market.
In 1980 the kibbutz was hit by an economic crisis and had to be largely privatized. The Afimilk dairy company, which is responsible for supplying milk to all of Israel, is also based in Afikim.
Afimilk is also a monopoly in the construction of milking systems and milking stalls and also exports these to other countries such as Belarus.
In 2010 Afimilk announced a major order with Vietnam for the production of 500,000 liters of milk per day, which corresponds to 40% of Vietnam's current demand.
