Schikaneder Kino (2009)

The Schikaneder Kino is one of the oldest cinemas in Vienna . It is located on Margaretenstrasse in the 4th district of Vienna, Wieden .

history

The Schikaneder cinema was founded in 1906. In 1930 the sound film was introduced.

The first license went to Adolf Pennersdorfer and Amalie Wellean from 1911 to 1919, making it the first cinema in the entire monarchy to be run by a woman. Georg Höllering received the license from 1919 to 1924 . He is also the producer of the Brecht film Kuhle Wampe or: Who Owns the World? known. In 1925 it was given to Hugo Klein, from whom it was withdrawn in 1938 by means of 'Aryanization'. According to the files, Franz Hansmann , who lived at Schönbrunnerstrasse 84 at the time , “Aryanized” the cinema. As envisaged by the Nazi policy for the expropriation of cinema operations, it was an 'old fighter' who had already joined the party in 1927, joined the SA and SS in 1931, with Standarte 89 assumed the rank of Untersturmführer, 'injured in battle 'was then imprisoned in the Wöllersdorf camp for 16½ months.

Although the business was not indebted and valued at 100,000 Schilling, the 'Ariseur' paid only a small portion of the agreed purchase price of RM 8000, RM 767.39. "The injured owner was thrown out of the business without a contractual basis and between the Ariseur ", wrote Hugo Klein, who managed to escape to England. In the restitution proceedings of 1948 (50 RK 82 48 of January 26th, 48) the license was postponed, but at that time it was confiscated as German property by the Soviets. It was expressly stated that the purchase price of RM 8,000 was too low.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Schikaneder Kino was run as a “cultural club cinema” with an exceptional program. For example, they showed American horror films from the 1930s.

Today it is a cinema that also hosts book presentations, performances , theatrical productions and events of various festivals. There are also DJ line-ups in the cinema bar .

At the beginning of 2018, the cinema and the bar were rented to the JVP for one evening . In this context, there was a shit storm against the Wegenstein family, who ran it with wild insults, personal threats against the couple's children as well as repeated announcements that the windows of the restaurant would be thrown in. As a result, the event received police protection, the announced demonstrations did not take place.
