history

Spielboden was founded in 1981. On the second floor of the Dornbirner Stadthalle (hence the name "Spielboden": play on the (roof) floor), cultural events were held beforehand under the responsibility of Jeunesse musicale (e.g .: Verein Triangel: Vorarlberger Rockbands, Verein Literaturforum: readings, Jeunesse musicale: music events, etc.). All of these initiatives were then brought together in the Spielboden association's board of directors, but initially remained autonomous.

Ulrich Gabriel was chairman of the Spielboden association from 1981–1986 , followed by Walter Rigger, Peter Niedermair, Rainer Feurstein, Willi Pramstaller, Günther Hagen and Jürgen Thaler. One of the most important cultural projects at the beginning was the three-year culture experiment "Wecken & Animieren", u. a. with sound machine competition and political puppet theater. There were constant, sometimes violent, disputes about cultural policy with the city of Dornbirn and the state of Vorarlberg. At that time, the Spielboden gained a reputation as a cultural organizer beyond the borders of the state of Vorarlberg.

Since 1995, chairman Willi Pramstaller has been moving the Spielboden out of the front building of the Dornbirn town hall, which was now surrounded by housing developments. The cultural center was to be newly and larger in the Rhomberg area, a former textile factory in the Rohrbach district of Dornbirn. The conversion of the industrial halls was finally realized with the support of the city of Dornbirn, the state of Vorarlberg and the federal government. In October 1997, the company moved into the new premises in Rhomberg's factory. At the same time, Willi Pramstaller and the board of directors founded Spielboden Kulturveranstaltungs GmbH, whose managing director until July 1998 was Willi Pramstaller.

Due to higher construction costs, structural and programmatic problems, the young company got into an economic crisis in 1998, which led to the resignation of the managing director and the entire advisory board. For a while, Reinhard Schiemer and Ulrich Gabriel jointly ran the GmbH. From 1999 to 2005 Ulrich Gabriel reorganized the Spielboden company as managing director and artistic director and reintroduced the curator principle based on the founding years. His successor Robert Renk left the Spielboden after just one year.

At the beginning of 2007 the board of directors was reformed. Jürgen Thaler became the new chairman of the association. Andreas Haim was appointed as the new managing director following a personnel selection process.
