Kevin Lyman (born April 5, 1961 in Fairmont , California ) is an American event manager . He is the founder of the Warped Tour , the longest running festival tour ever.

Life

Born on April 5, 1961, Lyman grew up in Fairmont, California . Even when he was in high school , he was responsible for event planning. With the income from these events, he tried to help the school's internal ski team , to which he was also a member, financially. Until his graduation from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona in 1984, Lyman also ran summer camps and a fitness camp for girls in Hawaii . He is married and has two daughters.

Career

Lyman's career as an event manager began in the early 1990s when he was responsible for stage management in the legendary Fender's Ballroom - which had to be closed after a Molotov attack by an angry neighbor of the event center. After a brief stint at Goldenvoice , he co-founded Lollapalooza , where he was also part of the organization team between 1991 and 1994. During his time at the university, he found his love for event management. Together with the later Coachella founder Paul Tollett, his brother Perry and Skip Paige, he organized smaller concerts and parties for the first time.

The following year, Lyman planned and organized the first edition of the Warped Tour , which featured groups such as L7 , Seawind , Sublime and No Doubt . He said in an interview that the concept had confused the visitors, which was also reflected in the fact that the first edition of the tour caused a financial loss. He also revealed that the main sponsor almost became Calvin Klein instead of Vans . However, a heavy snowstorm prevented a meeting between Lyman and the managing director, which enabled a spontaneous meeting between Lyman and the then CEO Walter Schoenfeld. The sponsorship marked the turning point of the festival tour. In 2015 alone, a total of 500,000 people attended at least one concert on this tour.

Furthermore, he is responsible for the organization of other events, including the Taste of Chaos , the Mayhem Festival , but also the Revolver Golden Gods Awards and the first edition of the Alternative Press Music Awards . He founded Kevin Lyman Productions and 4Fini Incorporated.

Attitude to the music scene

Kevin Lyman is also active outside of the punk scene . He is co-organizer of the metal festival Mayhem Festival , which was held for the last time in 2015. Lyman demanded that the metal scene must develop further in order not to get lost in the near future. In contrast to punk, the metal scene has not developed any further, but has stagnated. In an interview with Billboard magazine , he blamed the increasingly egocentric attitude of the musicians involved, as well as the warlike relationship between promoters, music agents and managers. In the same conversation he says that metal urgently needs new headliners in order not to go under.

He made this problem clear in an earlier interview. Supporters of the metal scene were hostile to Lyman, who later apologized for the misunderstanding. Lyman said that the problem is not limited to a single festival (related to Mayhem), but affects the entire scene.
