Eric Whitney (born April 15, 1991), under the pseudonym Ghostemane or alternatively as Baader-Meinhof , GASM, Swearr, Limsa Lominsa and formerly also known as Ill Biz , is an American musician, rapper and singer. During his previous life in Florida he was a member of various hardcore punk and doom metal bands. After starting his career as a rapper , he moved to Los Angeles , California , where he achieved success in the underground scene.

Ghostemane's mix of rap and metal helped him gain popularity on SoundCloud - alongside other artists such as Scarlxrd , Bones, Suicideboys and Killstation. In 2018, Ghostemane released the album N / O / I / S / E , which was well received in the underground trap metal and emo rap scene on SoundCloud, due to the mixture with instruments typically from industrial and nu metal .

Early life

Eric Whitney was born on April 15, 1991 in Lake Worth, Florida to parents from New York. Whitney grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida. As a teenager he was mainly interested in hardcore punk music, he learned to play the guitar and performed in various bands, including Nemesis and Seven Serpents. He also played soccer during his high school years , which he claims was practically forced upon him by his father, who died when Whitney was seventeen years old.

Whitney was introduced to rap music when he was the guitarist for the hardcore punk band Nemesis and a bandmate introduced him to rap in Memphis.

Career

Prior to his music career, Whitney worked for a business-to-business company where he earned $ 65,000 annually. In 2015, Whitney moved to Los Angeles , California because his music was not well received in South Florida . Whitney joined the artist collective Schemaposse . Other members of this collective included Craig Xen , JGRXXN and the late Lil Peep .

Schemaposse dissolved in April 2016. A little later, Whitney met rapper Pouya , with whom he published the video for 1000 Rounds in April 2017 .

In May 2018, Pouya announced that he would be producing a mixtape with Ghostemane.

In October 2018, he teamed up with Zubin to release the song Broken .

In May 2020 he announced that he would start a Lo-Fi Black Metal project called Baader-Meinhof.

style

Lyrically, Ghosteman's themes focus on the occult , depression , nihilism and death . Whitney began his career as a musician playing guitar in hardcore punk bands and drums in doom metal bands and has stated that his greatest influence is the black metal band Bathory . He spent most of his teenage years listening to extreme metal bands like Deicide , Death , Carcass, and Mayhem . As for rap music, Ghostemane is influenced by rap groups from the south like Outkast and Three 6 Mafia . Ghostemane has also cited Midwestern rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony as an early influence.

Ivory Suicide

Ivory Suicide (model for Suicide Girls ) and Ghostemane have been a couple since 2017, according to an interview. They met at one of Ghosteman's concerts in New York City and Ghosteman's Birthday, where Ivory was in the audience. According to her own statements, she did not like the music.

On March 9, 2020, Ghostemane obtained an injunction. He accuses his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend of domestic violence . The musician stated that he and his ex-girlfriend had not gotten along, and on March 9, the situation had turned very badly.
