Poppy (also known as That Poppy , real name Moriah Rose Pereira ; born January 1, 1995 in Whitman, Massachusetts ) is an American singer-songwriter and Internet personality. Growing up in Nashville , Tennessee , she moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to pursue a career as a musician. There she signed with Island Records and released her debut EP called Bubblebath . At the end of 2016, she became the face of the “Hello Sanrio” collection from the Japanese wholesale company Sanrio .

Life & Career

Poppy was born in Whitman, Massachusetts on June 26, 1995 and grew up in Nashville , Tennessee . She remembers wanting to be a rockette as a kid . Her father played the drums in a band and Poppy watched the band play as a kid. The name of the band is unknown. Before 2014, she performed at various social media festivals, such as VidCon 2012. In July 2013, she sang the chorus for rapper Eppic's song "Hide and Seek".

In 2014 she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as a singer. It was there that she began working with director Titanic Sinclair to produce a series of abstract videos for promotional purposes, among other things. In 2015 Poppy signed with the record label Island Records and released her first song, "Everybody Wants to Be Poppy", in June 2015. A month later she released her debut single "Lowlife". In February 2016 she released her first EP called "Bubblebath" on Island Records. In August 2016, she posted a series of promotional videos for the Steve Madden shoe brand on her YouTube channel as part of the Steve Madden Music program. Poppy released an experimental ambient music album in October 2016 entitled "3:36 (Music to Sleep To)", composed by Titanic Sinclair and herself, with the help of polysomnographers from Washington University in St. Louis . The album was specially designed to eliminate sleep problems. In the same year Poppy moved from Island Records to Interscope Records . In November 2016 she released the first song "Adored" under the new label. At the same time, she became the face of the “Hello Sanrio” collection from the Japanese brand Sanrio . Her next single, called "I'm Poppy", was released in February 2017 under her own label, I'm Poppy Records . In the same month she starred in a series of videos for Comedy Central entitled "Internet Famous With Poppy". In May 2017 the single "Computer Boy" followed, which she released under the label Mad Decent founded by Wesley Pentz alias Diplo . On January 10th, 2020 Poppy released her album "I Disagree" under the new label Sumerian Records .

style

Poppy describes himself as a " Kawaii - Barbie -Child" and says her style is of J-Pop influenced -Künstlern. She describes her music as "music that makes you want to rule the world". She began writing music herself for the first time in 2012. Her greatest inspiration and at the same time her favorite musician is Cyndi Lauper . She also cites Elvis Presley as an inspiration. Her album I Disagree from 2020 offers metal elements for the first time . Their appearance, paired with their singing style, in contrast to metal music, made comparisons with Babymetal .

Poppy's real identity is kept secret as much as possible. The singer explains: “I don't want people to talk about my age; I want them to talk about what I do [...] people, especially nowadays, are so obsessed with knowing everything. You'll have to invest your time to find it. ”Her age is also unknown, as the character Poppy does not identify with any age. It is assumed that Poppy was created by Moriah Pereira, as Pereira's earlier works often referred to the name Poppy.

Although many praise Poppy's music because of its catchiness, the person or character Poppy is always up for discussion and is described unreally. Racked described Poppy as "cute [and] cute, but extraterrestrial [and] bizarre" and also "highly addicting". Popular TV said of Poppy's music, " Resembling Gwen Stefani in the no-doubt era, That poppy mixes punk with ska- pop and makes you want to get up and dance."

Your YouTube videos are often viewed as commentary on social media . Mogendorff said her videos were "like comments about society that touch the fears of modern life."

Poppy's YouTube channel was created on October 6, 2011. The oldest video on the channel was uploaded in November 2014, an abstract sketch directed by Titanic Sinclair called "Poppy Eats Cotton Candy" (English for Poppy eats cotton candy ). Sinclair describes the videos as "a combination of Andy Warhol's pop accessibility, David Lynch's eeriness, and Tim Burton's hilarious tone." Poppy's channel has been discussed by many other YouTubers, including PewDiePie , MatPat, and the Fine Brothers on their React series. Poppy herself starred in an episode of the React series in which she reacted to children who reacted to her videos.

In addition to her abstract videos, Poppy also uploaded her official music, several covers and acoustic versions of her songs "Lowlife" and "Everybody Wants To Be Poppy" on her channel.

She also has an animated mini-series on her channel called Everybody Wants To Be Poppy. Titanic Sinclair directed the animation and Melanie Foreman provided the animation. Poppy speaks to himself, Titanic Sinclair speaks Rex, actor Matt Bennett speaks Pho, singer-songwriter Simon Wilcox speaks Phoebe, and photographer Sam McGuire speaks Wyatt.
