The $ uicideboy $ are an American hip hop group with roots in New Orleans . Members are the two cousins Ruby Da Cherry and $ lick Sloth ($ crim), who have been working together as $ uicideboy $ since 2014 and have quickly gained popularity.

Since it was founded in 2014, the group has published over 40 projects to date, including EPs and mixtapes. With the EP Radical $ uicide , they reached number 17 in the Billboard Top R&B / Hip-Hop album charts in 2016 .

history

$ crim (born April 11, 1989, real name Scott Arceneaux Jr. ) and Ruby Da Cherry (born April 22, 1990, real name Aristos Norman Petrou ) are cousins and come from New Orleans.

Ruby grew up in the "7th ward" district and founded his first punk band at the age of 13 . For 12 years he played different instruments in different bands. Among other things, he was the drummer of the "Vapo-Rats". However, the great success did not materialize. He worked in his father's restaurant until he became successful with $ crim. In 2013 he graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Music and Fine Arts.

$ crim started also at the age of 13 years, as a DJ playing music. He continued this until he was around 19 years old and, inspired by rapper and music producer T-Pain , started producing music himself. $ crim worked as a furniture salesman for 3 years until he was fired because of his tattoos. He also worked as a drug dealer . At that time he released several mixtapes , but here too there was no success.

Both cousins aspired to success in the music industry. Ruby, plagued by depression, and $ crim, drug addict, unemployed and also depressed, made a pact that they would commit suicide if they weren't successful at age 30. Then they founded the G * 59 Records label together .

At the end of 2015 the Suicideboys went on tour for the first time with the Greyscale Tour , together with artists such as Rvmirxz, Black Smurf and Jgrxxn. At the beginning of 2016, the $ outh $ ide $ uicide tour continued with Pouya, Fat Nick, Germ, XXXTentacion , Craig Xen and other artists. Their level of awareness increased significantly, especially through touring together with other more successful artists. Further tours and numerous appearances followed, also in Europe and Oceania. In 2017 they performed at the Splash! Festival in Germany, the Woo Hah! Festival in the Netherlands and at the Blockfest in Tampere , Finland.

Their debut album I Don't Want To Die In New Orleans was due to be released in December 2017 , but the release was postponed because the album was not yet finished. In July 2018, the duo announced that the album would be released in New Orleans with the title I Want to Die , as they had noticed after the many concerts last year that success and money never make you happy. A few days later the I Want To Die In New Orleans tour was announced with two concerts in Germany, on which the album will be heard live for the first time. The album was finally released on September 7th, 2018.

In May 2019 they released the EP Live Fast Die Whenever , recorded together with Travis Barker, drummer of the band blink-182 . Many of the songs have clear influences from punk music, which is reminiscent of Ruby's earlier bands. One of the Korn guitarists James "Munky" Shaffer is involved in three songs. The album was praised by the press as a successful fusion of the two genres, although it was criticized that the instruments were lost in the still trap-heavy mix.

Music style and lyrics

In their songs, the Suicideboys rap about their difficult childhood and drug addiction life and often also about depression , suicide and death . At concerts they often talk about their experiences with it and want to convey to fans who are also struggling with such problems that they are not alone and should be strong. The relationship with the fans is also considered to be open and warm, for example they gave a spontaneous encore during the Global Epidemic Tour 2017 in Cologne at 3 a.m. after the concert was canceled due to technical problems.

The duo does not want to be associated with the horrorcore genre, as the title "Stop Calling Us Horrorcore" from the album "Radical $ uicide" suggests. Instead, they call their genre "Shadow Rap" because, according to them, it is a genre that cannot exist in too much light.

The Suicideboys publish their albums and EPs on online platforms such as Bandcamp , SoundCloud and Spotify .
