tape.tv was a music internet broadcaster based in Berlin . Viewers could see the current music video program around the clock and influence it interactively. According to its own information, the provider had around 45,000 music videos and 3.9 million unique users with an average length of time of 25 minutes. tape.tv financed itself through cooperations and a new form of moving image advertising, which the company called "entertainment advertising". The managing director was Conrad Fritzsch. Tape.tv was founded in July 2008 . Tape.tv filed for bankruptcy in mid-November 2016 .

program

Tape.tv was Internet music television that users could personalize to suit their personal preferences. tape.tv was streamed directly via a web browser , followed later by mobile apps .

As with a traditional television station, viewers had the opportunity to switch on the current program and use it passively. The editorially supervised music program could also be adapted using various functions; For example, users could choose between different musical styles (genres) such as alternative , hip-hop , pop music , rock music , indie , electro , soul , rhythm and blues or metal . If the viewer selected a genre, only videos that were assigned to this genre were shown. Music videos that users prefer or deselect have been noted and will be included in the personalized program in future.

It was also possible to choose from around 45,000 music videos using the search function; these could be sent online individually or as an individually compiled mixtape and posted on social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter.

tape.tv had access to original videos from the four record companies Universal Music , Sony Music , EMI and Warner Music as well as content from various independent labels and their distributors: Finetunes, Kontor New Media, Rough Trade and Zebralution.

Formats

From summer 2010 tape.tv produced its own formats, which were broadcast on the website. In July 2010 the live acoustic series started on the roofs . Artists such as Incubus , Patrice , Plan B , Marteria , Aloe Blacc , Madsen and Marit Larsen were included in “roof concerts” in Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna.

In May 2011 tape.tv started the 45-minute live music show on tape in cooperation with ZDFkultur . Live images of viewers were transmitted live to the recording studio via their webcam, and viewers could comment on the program via Facebook. The series' opening guest on May 12, 2011 was the Bielefeld rapper Casper .

Since the end of May 2011, tape.tv has broadcast live concerts as part of the tape live format . The format started on May 27, 2011 with the broadcast of a Goose concert , followed by a recording by the rapper Marteria in August .

Video premieres

Germany-wide video premieres by well-known artists were broadcast on tape.tv. Tape.tv has been showing music video premieres by artists such as Rihanna , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Farin Urlaub , Tocotronic , Depeche Mode , Lady Gaga , Placebo , 2raumwohnung and Prinz Pi since the beginning of 2009 .

In addition to music videos, the editorial team also oversaw the tape.tv blog. Written articles on current clips, video premieres and other editorial features were published on the weblog.

history

On July 1st, 2008 tape.tv started under the internet address of the same name. Tape.tv GmbH, which later traded as tape.tv AG, was founded by Conrad Fritzsch and Stephanie Renner, who were also managing directors of the company. On December 17, 2009, the beta test of a further developed version of tape.tv started, which was put into operation on January 19, 2010 after a four-week test phase.

At the end of 2011, the startup left its previous premises in the Berlin district of Weißensee and moved into the former Australian representation in the GDR at Grabbeallee 34 in Berlin-Pankow; the number of employees had grown from 35 to 85, and internationalization and entry into the British market with local strategic partners were planned.

With Jan Emich from the voucher portal DailyDeal , tape.tv gained another managing director in 2013, who became the company's chief operating officer . In August of the same year, the now closed opinion platform Amen was taken over by tape.tv; The startup briefly gained media interest through an investment by US actor Ashton Kutcher . Amen founder Felix Petersen took on the role of Chief Product Officer and Amen founder Florian Weber that of Chief Technology Officer .

Due to the sharp decline in user numbers, smaller offices in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg had to be moved into at the beginning of 2014 and the workforce had to be reduced by half; Jan Emich also left the company.

In March 2014 the website of tape.tv was relaunched and in May 2014 the mobile app Tape Express was published, which was based on the navigation concept of Tinder , a mobile dating application.

Another job cuts took place in October 2014 and the Amen founders left the company after just under a year. At that time, the startup had a core team of 20 employees; Jakob Fricke was responsible for the product area, Matt Patterson for the development area and Roel van der Ven for the content area.

In February 2016 the shareholders DCM, DGP and the Investitionsbank Berlin held "Talks with a new investor who wanted to further develop the platform with a strategic realignment"; The planned new business model was an OTT platform for streaming exclusive live events.

The former founder Conrad Fritzsch left the company in July 2016; he works for Mercedes-Benz today .

After the negotiations were broken off by the investor without giving reasons, tape.tv AG board member Dario Karl Suter filed for insolvency proceedings at the Charlottenburg district court in Berlin on November 14, 2016 . Operations were completely stopped on November 23, 2016 due to the lack of a robust business model ; the remaining 15 employees lost their jobs.

The tape.tv brand is now owned by Appolicious Inc., which, according to its own information, had planned a restart of the platform on mobile devices for 2018.

Business model

Users were able to use tape.tv's offers free of charge. The tape.tv business model consisted of the building blocks of advertising and cooperation.

In 2011 the IVW recorded 11.1 million visitors to the tape.tv website. Since then, the number of users has fallen continuously: 8.9 million in 2012, 3.9 million in 2013 and only 2.2 million up to and including September 2014 (excluding mobile users). According to IVW, only 700,000 visitors actually used the offer in 2014. The company was also accused of generating user numbers by placing streams embedded in pop-under advertising on third-party sites.

advertising

Like traditional private television stations, tape.tv was financed through advertising. tape.tv has developed a new type of advertising with the 360 ° MotionAd and has already received several awards for this. The 360 ° MotionAd was advertising in the form of a dynamic flash animation that covers an area of 360 ° around a music video and does not interrupt the current program. A short clip was also broadcast after each video.

In contrast to the market launch, in which comparatively little advertising was shown, i.e. a commercial clip was played after about every third to fourth song, the advertising density had increased in November 2012 to a commercial of around 30 seconds after each music video.

Cooperations

tape.tv cooperated with various partners in the online and offline area. These partners included the Internet platforms of Bild , Yahoo , Spiegel Online , the public television channels ZDFkultur and 3sat , Spex and Radio Fritz . There were also platform partnerships with Facebook , Last.fm , Spotify and vavideo.
