Topshop (own typography in capital letters: TOPSHOP ) is a British, multinational retail company specializing in fashionable clothing , shoes , make-up and accessories. It was founded in 1964 by Peter Robinson.

history

Topshop was founded in 1964 as Peter Robinson's Top Shop (German about "Der Tolle Laden von Peter Robinson"), a youthful fashion brand within a branch of Peter Robinson in Sheffield , a now defunct retail chain in Great Britain. The first independent Topshop store was opened in 1974. Topman was further developed as an offshoot brand in the 1970s to meet the needs of male customers. Today Topman is run as an independent chain, although some branches are located within regular Topshop branches in order to be able to use synergy effects.

Companies

The company has branches in around 20 countries and also an online mail order business that is active in many countries, including Germany. Topshop is a subsidiary of the Arcadia Group , which is 100% owned by Philip Green , and which has a number of other retail companies and fashion outlets in the clothing segment such as B. Burton , Dorothy Perkins, and Miss Selfridge .

Branch network

In North and South America, Topshop currently has branches in Brazil , Canada , Chile and the USA . In Europe there are currently branches of the Topshop brand in Croatia , Cyprus , Gibraltar , Iceland , Poland , Ireland , Russia , Serbia , Slovenia , Spain , the Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden , Turkey and Great Britain . In the Middle East, the clothing chain has branches in Israel , Jordan , Lebanon , Kuwait , Qatar , Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In Southeast Asia , Topshop is represented in the markets of Indonesia , Japan , Malaysia , the Philippines , Singapore and Thailand .

After the success of the clothing collection, which was co-designed and inspired by Kate Moss , Topshop decided to launch the collection on the US market. Topshop has signed a contract with the US clothing chain Barneys New York , which enables the collections to be sold through its 19 branches. Topshop is also present with an offshoot in the New York department store Opening Ceremony .

On May 1, 2010, Topshop opened its first store in New Zealand , in North Shore City in the Auckland region . Before the store even opened, some of the collections were sold out. New Zealand designer Karen Walker previously visited the UK and was responsible for selecting many of the pieces for sale in the New Zealand store.

In 2011 Topshop expanded to Australia with flagship stores in both South Wales and Victoria , at least that was reported in various sources. However, Topshop's parent company Arcadia Group has declined to comment and thus both to confirm and reject this message.

Products

Topshop's current fashion brands are 'Belief', 'Calypso', 'Pageant Princess' and 'Off Track', along with other more luxurious garments and designer affiliations operating under the label 'The Boutique'.

In May 2007, British supermodel Kate Moss designed her first collection for Topshop. The announcement of the Moss collection took place just before the departure of the Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ) Jane Shepherdson .

In July 2007 the British artist Stella Vine created a limited fashion collection exclusively for Topshop, which was largely inspired by their colorful works of art. These included t-shirts, undershirt tops ("vest tops") and t-shirt dresses, each designed in pink glitter for the label. British newspaper The Guardian commented on the fashion collection of t-shirts that Stella Vine recently designed for Topshop, saying that the fact that her t-shirts are adorned with creative and cunning slogans such as "Breaking Up With Her Boyfriend" (in English : "I'll break up with your boyfriend"), say a lot for your social and public support. "

Topshop also contacted Shiatzy Chen , who presented a collection of "Ready-to-Wear" items in November 2010.

Controversy

The Topshop Oxford Circus flagship store in London was damaged by protesters protesting UK government cuts in March 2011

British tax policy after the financial crisis

On December 4, 2010, as part of an extensive day of action, Protestants held a sit-in in front of Topshop's flagship store at Oxford Circus in London and in Brighton , a few people glued themselves to the branch's windows, while it was similar in other shopping streets across the UK There were scenes that express the protests against tax increases , against the machinations and tax evasion of wealthy individuals and against the profiteering of "big business".

In February 2011, armed police arrested 19-year-old Jed Miller after he wrote the words “Pay Your Taxes” on the wall of a Topshop store in Colchester in washable ink .

Suppliers

Topshop has been harshly criticized by the student campaign network People & Planet for the alleged use of cotton picked and harvested by slaves in Uzbekistan . In addition, Topshop refused to join the UK Ethical Trading Initiative , an agreement between over 70 UK firms to adhere to ethical and moral standards in trading.

In response to criticism of the working conditions of workers in factories that manufacture products for Topshop, Philip Green stated succinctly: “You [ The Sunday Times ] are telling me that factories are happy to breach our code of conduct. I've got to look into it. " (In German, for example: "You (referring to the British newspaper The Sunday Times ) tell me that factories easily break our code of conduct. I have to make up my own mind.") This could mean that the company could try that in the future To improve manufacturing conditions, the allegations should turn out to be conclusive.
