International Central Institute for Youth and Educational Television

The International Central Institute for Youth and Educational Television (IZI for short) is a documentation and research center at Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Its mission is to promote the quality of (inter) national children's, youth and educational television and to qualify the discussion about the educational mandate of the broadcast media, its contemporary implementation and the media's responsibility towards society. The IZI was founded in 1965 and is subordinate to the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation . Together with PRIX JEUNESSE INTERNATIONAL, it is supported by the Society for the Promotion of International Youth and Educational Television . Members of the society are the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, the Second German Television, the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Munich and the Bavarian State Center for New Media . The IZI has been headed by Maya Götz since 2003.

research

The IZI conducts empirical research projects on current program formats and topics in the field of children's, youth and educational television. In cooperation with international scientists, current and publicly relevant topics are researched in order to provide well-founded knowledge for editors, program planning, pedagogues, associations and journalists.

The research focuses on basic research on socially relevant topics, trend research on currently particularly successful or discussed formats, and program research as part of program advice.

The IZI documents the international state of research on children's, youth and educational television. For this purpose, the relevant specialist literature and information are researched, the content is indexed in detail and made publicly accessible through a bilingual Internet database (IZI-Datenbank.de). The database is the largest of its kind in the German-speaking area with international references and full texts on this documentation focus that can be accessed online.

Areas of responsibility of the IZI

The IZI also maintains a special scientific library and conducts literature research. The IZI documentation is networked with numerous national and international providers of scientific specialist information (DFG, UNESCO, IFLA, etc.) and thus enables comprehensive access to the IZI's documentary data pool.

Publications

TelevIZIon magazine

The IZI publishes a German-language print edition and an English-language online edition of the trade journal TelevIZIon every year. The target group are television professionals in the field of children, youth, education as well as educators, the press and those interested in topics. One issue summarizes the current state of research on a topic-centered basis and expands it with its own IZI studies with added value for television professionals. Outstanding programs on the topic are presented and, if possible, their effectiveness is described through program research.

Books and articles

The IZI publishes its scientific results in articles and publishes books in German and English, which present the study results more comprehensively and thus expand the national and international scientific discourse.

Lectures

The IZI makes its knowledge available nationally and internationally. In lectures and workshops, the research status in demand will be presented to television professionals, socially relevant institutions and associations.

Conferences and workshops

The IZI organizes conferences and workshops aimed specifically at those responsible for television. Current research results are presented on them and questions of quality are critically examined.

Advice to socially relevant institutions

On request, the IZI advises ministries (especially family and culture ministries), associations, foundations, etc. in the areas of children's, youth and educational television at both national and international level.

Media literacy research

The IZI documents the current state of media education and advises editors on projects to promote media literacy, conducts its own studies on this and creates material, etc. a. for socially relevant institutions.

The IZI as an information center
