activism

DiMarco believes that deafness is a minority difference, but not a disability, even an asset in modeling. In his television appearances, he feels responsible for representing the deaf community and culture. As is customary in deaf culture, he capitalizes the adjective “Deaf” in English, which emphasizes being deaf as an identity instead of an affected state. DiMarco advocates that deaf roles should also be played by deaf actors and that it is important to have deaf decision-makers behind the camera, and therefore supports the #DeafTalent movement.

In 2016, he set up his own foundation, the Nyle DiMarco Foundation , which is particularly committed to providing educational access and resources for deaf children and their families. He is a spokesperson for the organization LEAD-K (Language Equality & Acquisition for Deaf Kids) and contributor to the ASL app.

In the 2016 US presidential election , DiMarco publicly supported Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton with a promotional video for her campaign. He was very critical of Donald Trump for his anti-disability remarks and said he was glad not to have to hear them.

Since coming out as sexually fluid, DiMarco has also represented the intersectionality of the deaf community and the LGBT community. Together with the deaf, gender queer actor Chella Man he spoke in videos about the Deaf LGBT community. In May 2019, he supported the Equality Act, a bill to protect against LGBT discrimination, with a video for the Human Rights Campaign .
