Queen of Drags is a German casting show on the station ProSieben , in which drag queens from Germany , Austria and Switzerland compete against each other. The moderators and jury are Heidi Klum , Bill Kaulitz and Conchita Wurst . The first season of the show, which aired November 14 through December 19, 2019, was won by Yoncé Banks .

In March 2020, it was announced that the show was getting a second season.

format

The ten participants will be housed together in a villa by the broadcaster , similar to Germany's Next Top Model . In addition to the competition, the individual episodes also show how they live together in the house. Each episode represents a week, each with a different motto, on which the drag queens present a performance on a show stage in front of an audience. The jury judges these performances by awarding points. The participant with the most points becomes Queen of the Week , the one with the fewest points is eliminated from the competition.

In addition, there are accompanying voiceovers from Conchita and interview sequences from both the jurors and the participants, who comment on the event and explain the background of the travesty and the LGBT community based on their own biographies.

prehistory

Model and development of the idea

The model for a contest show about drag queens is the American format RuPaul's Drag Race by and with the drag queen RuPaul . The idea of a German offshoot was repeatedly raised. In 2013 the company Phantomfilm secured the German rights for the format, but the search for a mainstream broadcaster to broadcast it was fruitless. Previously, the Die Travestie-Show , produced by Endemol Studios , was broadcast annually on RTL in 1996 , moderated by Bruno Bieri and in 1997 , moderated by Karsten Speck . At that time, Linda de Mol , Til Schweiger and Lilo Wanders were on the jury . The Miss Travesty was chosen and a pop-diva impersonator in a separate category .

In the German model casting show Germany's Next Topmodel , the German audience as well as Heidi Klum came into contact with drag in the 13th season in 2018 and in the 14th season in 2019 , as several drag queens from America - including some from RuPaul's Drag - before the semi-finals Race - appeared as guests and worked with the candidates. In 2019, Bill Kaulitz was a guest judge in the corresponding episode. These episodes were each particularly popular with the audience.

ProSieben boss Daniel Rosemann says: “We have been thinking about the drag queen for a long time. And about how we can implement the topic appropriately for ProSieben. In the penultimate season #GNTM, our viewers celebrated the drag episode very much. That is why we have now developed our own show with the ProSiebenSat.1 production company Red Seven. "

Criticism in advance

Controversy about Heidi Klum

ProSieben announced Queen of Drags on June 26th through a Facebook post with which they also announced the participating jurors. The photo uploaded, which only showed Klum, drew particular attention to her. The fact that this should moderate a show with queer content, topics and participants was met with very controversial reaction, especially by the LGBT community in Germany, and responded to through forms of protest such as online petitions .

Even before the show was announced, Jurassica Parka wrote a comment for the Victory Column : "It's sad, it's pathetic - actually it's actually a scandal." The daily criticized Klum's assessment behavior and dealings with the candidates in Germany's Next Top Model , which make the candidates into objects and expose and propagate limited body ideals: “So GNTM is about devaluation, shame and competition. RPDR is about empowerment, subversive fabulousness and solidarity. ”Therefore it is difficult to imagine that she shows the drag contestants the necessary respect. On the day the show was announced, the German travesty artists Margot Schlönzke and Ryan Stecken started a petition on Change.org that criticized the problem that the show was not about a queer personality, but rather from someone who “was about drag, the associated history, the Attitude to life, identity, drag culture, the scene and the entire industry has absolutely no idea ”. In addition to the criticism of the supposed main judge, they nevertheless expressly welcomed the fact that such a format is coming to Germany. Olivia Jones also took up the format of the show in a positive open letter: “This is the first time that drag queens in Germany will have their own prime time show on a major German TV broadcaster. Many have fought in vain for years for this. In the end, Heidi Klum brought the breakthrough, in which she had the courage to give drag queens a large platform at Germany's Next Topmodel and in which she then campaigned for her own drag queen format. German Drags can finally show everyone that they don't have to hide behind their American colleagues and that we have an incredibly diverse scene. "

Klum announced in a statement that she has loved and admired drag culture for years. In the first episode of the show, she took the criticism of her among the candidates as a topic of conversation and defended herself: “I'm open to everything. Tolerant for all people. ”However, she finds the reaction of the said community to her intolerant:“ Because I'm straight, I'm white and I'm a woman. That's totally mean. "

Advertising poster

The official advertising poster, which was published in early November, also caused critical reactions on the Internet. It shows the three jurors, with Klum appearing oversized, their legs as long as the other two jurors in their entirety, which was commented as a " Photoshop Fail". It is also criticized that it shows no reference to travesty and thus does not advertise the content of the show: “[H] ier probably again outweighed the desire to get the audience to tune in with the help of the level of awareness of the jury members (without them necessarily understanding should, what it's about), “wrote Gregor Hohl for Fernsehserien.de .

reception

After the first episode, the drag format was mainly positively received and Klum's rather cautious role also surprised positively in some cases, but continued to be criticized most.

Margot Schlönzke gave an interview to Focus : She sees her fears about Klum confirmed that she has no idea about the matter. In addition, Klum's comments on the criticism showed that she did not understand it. But she thinks it is positive that Klum has been severely cut back, which may also be due to the criticism in advance. In contrast to Olivia Jones, it became clear that Klum had no idea. The world also said that the jury evaluations made it clear why a drag queen was the better jury chairman.

However, it was also noticeable that her jury colleagues can be seen as much as she and Klum again has less airtime on this show than ever before in one of her shows, so that the drag queens are actually the focus here. For Anja Rützel , the good moments of the show are when the drag queens have their say. Thanks to their clarification and background stories, the format “has what it takes to convey real messages.” Gregor Löscher for Fernsehserien.de draws the conclusion “that the negative press was a bit premature beforehand. The participants hold their narrative largely in their own hands, even crying is more likely than in front of the camera - nobody is shown here. "

Audience ratings

The mixed reviews contrasted with moderate to weak ratings. However, several editions competed with special episodes of “ Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? “Or simultaneous football broadcasts . Even the first episode fell short of expectations. This was followed by a downward trend over several episodes with a short upward movement before the finale, which itself brought in the season low. The show was consistently popular with 20 to 29 year olds, with the final reaching a 17 percent market share. In the 30 to 39 age group it was 8.9 percent, and 3.3 percent among those over 40.

criticism

The third edition of the show was censored by the editorial staff, which met with little understanding from the audience. Some of the queens had to perform the play "Red Dragchen and the Bad Wolf" in a challenge, which they themselves were allowed to direct and create. It was surprising for the audience that ProSieben censored a large part of the performance with beeps and crossbars, apparently for reasons of youth protection. As a result, the content was barely comprehensible and punch lines ran into nothing. This was commented negatively in the press and on social networks.

In the final episode, candidate Aria Addams had to see a specialist because of an eye infection, which is why she arrived late for the cover shoot for Cosmopolitan. Heidi Klum showed little understanding for this and only asked, "Is she still coming? We're in the final! ”, Which is why it was sharply criticized by viewers.

In a special video that was published on YouTube and the broadcaster, Vava Vilde, Aria Addams and Yoncé Banks responded to hateful comments from the Internet on behalf of all candidates by reading them out and answering.

The winner of the show was offered 100,000 euros in prize money, a campaign with the cosmetics brand MAC , a trip to Christopher Street Day in New York and a cover for German Cosmopolitan as prizes. However, many viewers searched in vain for the German edition of Cosmopolitan with Yoncé Banks on the cover. Actress Zoey Deutch was depicted on the editions that were available in stores . The cover with Yoncé Banks only appeared as a special edition with a limited number of copies and was only available in selected shops at airports and train stations. This was justified by the fact that the season finale of “Queen of Drags” took place in mid-December and the January edition appeared almost at the same time, so only a subsequent special edition would have been possible. For many fans this had a bland aftertaste and suggested that Cosmopolitan had deliberately only wanted to distribute the cover with a drag queen in small numbers in order to avoid negative comments. Cover pictures on later editions were not uncommon for winners of “Germany's Next Topmodel”.
