Chachki was best known for winning the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race . In 2019, New York's Chachki was voted one of the 20 Most Influential Drag Queens in the United States .

Life

Dardo was born in Atlanta, Georgia , and grew up there. Dardo is of semi- Ecuadorian origin and attended several Roman Catholic schools, where Dardo wore second-hand clothes under the "worn out" school uniform and thus made his first experiences in fashion, an important aspect for Dardo's later career as a drag queen.

Dardo moved from home at the age of 19 and from then on lived with a friend who helped Dardo find possible appearances in drag competitions. Dardo also received a study place in fashion design at the private Savannah College of Art and Design , but Dardo did not take it in order to concentrate on the drag career.

Dardos artist name consists of the figure Violet from Bound - Bound and the Yiddish word tchotchke [ tʃɒtʃkə ] together, which indicates a rather worthless item that only a decorative purpose met (similar to the German Nippes ). Dardo got the surname from a roommate whom Dardo's fondness for ceramic clown figures was alienating.

Dardo does not see himself as male or female, but as genderqueer , i.e. non-binary . According to his own information, Dardo has no preferred pronouns, but Violet Chachki uses feminine pronouns.

Chachki made her first drag appearance at the age of 19 (and thus still a minor in the United States) at the LeBuzz bar in Marietta . With the help of a forged ID, Chachki wanted to take part in a drag competition in the club, but inadvertently entered her real date of birth on the registration form, which is why Chachki was prohibited from entering the bar. A few months later, Chachki won the Miss New Faces title at Friends on Ponce , Atlanta's largest drag bar. After participating in other drag competitions, she found a drag mother , i.e. mentor, in the drag queen Dax ExclamationPoint . At the end of 2012, Chachki was hired as a permanent member of The Other Show in the drag bar Jungle , also in Atlanta . Through the appearances, her fame increased in the scene, while at work she also met popular colleagues such as Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 , Amanda Lepore and Lady Bunny .

In 2013, Chachki was photographed for the Legendary Children art project , which was about the Atlanta drag scene. The photos were exhibited in the Gallery in 1526, with two of them being veiled after complaints from employees on which Chachki's penis or gaff (a piece of clothing that drag queens use to cover their genitals during performances) could be seen. Later another photograph of Chachki was partially obscured, showing a still image of lips covered with a white liquid in the background, some employees interpreted this as sperm .

At the end of 2014, Chachki was announced as one of 14 participants in the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race ; she had previously unsuccessfully applied for the sixth season. During the show, Chachki made an appearance thanks to her great skill in fashion design, her focus on aesthetics and her self-confident demeanor. Chachki won three of the eleven challenges named: creating a nude costume, a live partner dance and the creation of a Hello Kitty outfit. On June 1, 2015, Chachki finally won the season and thus the prize money of $ 100,000.

Burlesque and model

Chachki is also burlesque known -Auftritte, especially in the area Vertikaltuch- and ring acrobatics. In January 2017, Chachki performed in Chicago , Dallas and Houston on The Art of Teese , a national burlesque tour by artist Dita Von Teese . In November of that year, Chachki became the first drag queen to face a major lingerie advertising campaign . She promoted products named after the famous model and playmate Bettie Page .

In January 2018, Chachki walked the catwalk for Moschino at Milan Fashion Week . In May of the following year she was a guest at the charitable Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art . At the art exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion about the Camp style , Chachki wore a glove-shaped dress by designer and Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott, which had already been worn by another model at the Milan Fashion Week 2018.

music

In 2014, Chachki appeared on the cover of producer Flying Lotus's single Cosplay, and was featured in a commercial for the song on Adult Swim as it was composed for the broadcaster's animated short film The Birth of Captain Murphy .

On June 2, 2015, one day after winning RuPaul's Drag Race , Chachki released the single Bettie . Her first Extended Play Gagged was released on June 30th, and a music video for the single Vanguard was produced in addition to Bettie . The album was at number eleven on the Dance / Electronic Albums, number 16 on the Heatseekers Charts and number 48 on Billboard's independent albums . According to Chachki, Bettie's music video , which is about a double life, was inspired by Bettie Page's conversion to evangelicalism and the end of her career as a pin-up model . According to Chachki , the template for Vanguard , which has the fight against bigotry and homophobia , was an incident in an Australian McDonald’s branch in which she was the victim of a violent assault.

In May 2018, Chachki released a third burlesque-style single called A Lot More Me . In the accompanying music video, which is about the glamorous everyday life of a famous drag queen , was devised for two years and is inspired by old Hollywood films and the photographs by David LaChapelle and Steven Klein , Dita von Teese plays a leading role alongside Chachki. In the video, Chachki wears clothes from Prada , classic burlesque pieces and a dress she designed in the style of Thierry Mugler .

style

Chachkis style was that of Oscar Raymundo HuffPost called "obsession with old-fashioned glamor", which among other things, by their love of tightly laced corsets distinguished. According to their own statements, Chachki's artistic role models are the fashion designers Christian Dior , Thierry Mugler and John Galliano as well as, in their opinion, style icons such as Dovima , Dita Von Teese and Raquel Welch .

Chachki is also known for fetish aesthetics, so her performances often allude to bondage , latex subcultures, illustrations by the fetish artist John Willie , Dominas and Bettie Page, who often wore fetish clothing. In an interview from 2016, Chachki described drag art itself as a fetish because, like bondage and latex clothing, it is uncomfortable, but when they are fully at it, those who wear them are willing to endure it in order to be able to enjoy themselves in their own way and way to present. For this reason, drag is almost exhibitionism.
