David Petruschin (born April 8, 1979 in Victorville , California , United States ), stage name Raven ( German : Rabe ), is an American drag queen and a make-up artist . He first achieved international fame through his appearance on the second season of the reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race .

Life

Petrushin was born in Victorville , California, the first of five children. His parents separated when he was seven years old; his Russian mother raised him as a Mormon . Petrushin has now publicly distanced himself from the belief.

Career

Petruschin initially worked as a cosmetics seller and freelance make-up artist; in his spare time he performed as a go-go dancer under the name Phoenix . In 2002 he began performing as a drag queen under the name Raven . In contrast to most drag queens, Petruschin learned his trade without the help of a so-called "drag mother", who usually acts as a kind of mentor . As a Raven, he applied for the first and second season of the American reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race .

RuPaul's Drag Race

In 2010 it was announced that Raven would be participating in the second season of Drag Race . He won the mini-challenge on the first episode, which was a photo shoot . In the second and third episode he was about to be eliminated, but was able to prevail against the other participants. He won more mini-challenges in the fourth and fifth episodes. He won the main challenges in the seventh and eighth episodes. By the end of the show, Raven finished second behind Tyra Sanchez.

RuPaul's Drag U

Raven was a former by many participants of Drag Race, who were invited in the offshoot RuPaul's Drag U act as so-called "drag professors". In the three seasons broadcast so far, Raven acts as a kind of "drag mother" for female participants who are dressed up as drag queens. In contrast to the second season of Drag Race , Raven is not portrayed as a malicious, but rather as a caring mentor. He previously criticized the way he was portrayed in Drag Race .

RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars

On August 6, 2012, it was announced that Raven was among twelve previous Drag Race participants who would again compete in the All Stars offshoot . This mission also was like the previous on the television station Logo broadcast and winning there on October 22, 2012. Together with Jujubee, a further drag queens from the second season of Drag Race , he was part of the team Rujubee . The team won the mini-challenges in the second and fifth episodes. They reached the finals, which aired on November 26, 2012, and Raven took second place behind Chad Michaels.

Make-up artist

Petrushin returned to Drag Race as RuPaul's personal make-up artist for season nine . He was then nominated for the 2018 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards in the “Best Contemporary Makeup” category. For his work on the tenth season he received an Emmy nomination in the category "Outstanding Make-Up" for the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards . In addition to his work as RuPaul's make-up artist, Petruschin has also been the creative producer of Drag Race since its tenth season and of All Stars since its third season.

More apparitions

Raven has appeared in a number of television commercials . He had guest appearances in series like Pretty Hurts and America's Next Top Model . In 2011 he was seen in the music video of Raja, winner of the third season of Drag Race , for the song Diamond Crowned Queen , for which he received praise from various critics. He also had a guest appearance in the video for "Queen", a song by the band Xelle. MNDR used Raven as the focus of their video for "Feed Me Diamonds".

In 2014, Raven and Raja started the weekly Fashion Photo Ruview web series , in which they judge the clothing of celebrities and other drag queens . Raven has also been featured in many other World of Wonder shows. In addition to international tours , Raven hosts several night shows in Southern California.

Influence on drag queens

Raven has been named several times as the most influential make-up artist within the drag queen scene. He developed new contour techniques, including a strongly contoured nose with a bright point at the end (an "exclamation point") and a certain way of highlighting the cheekbones with makeup . He also popularized his painted over nude lips, detailed eye makeup, the use of contact lenses and a fake beauty mark, and the use of more natural colors that most drag queens deliberately hadn't used in a long time.

Raven's influence is so widespread that many older drag queens, such as B. Bianca Del Rio , winner of the sixth season of Drag Race , can now only find Raven's makeup among younger drag queens. In 2016, Raven was used by Vanity Fair as an inspiration for their project "100 Years of Drag Fashion". He represented the drag style of the 2000s in this project. Raven is also the "drag mother" of the runner-up from the eighth season of Drag Race , Naomi Smalls. He also won the "Best Lips AKA Pucker Up Award" at the first WOWie Awards in 2017.
