Alyssa Edwards (born January 16, 1980 ; real name: Justin Dwayne Lee Johnson ) is an American drag queen , dance instructor and comedian . Edwards is best known for her participation in RuPaul's Drag Race .

Life

Johnson chose the stage name Alyssa Edwards as an homage to Alyssa Milano and his drag mother Laken Edwards. Johnson is part of the House of Edwards drag family and the drag mother of Shangela Laquifa Wadley .

Johnson starred in the 2008 award-winning documentary Pageant . The film portrays five men who participated in the 34th Miss Gay America competition in 2006. Johnson competed in a variety of beauty pageants in the 2000s. On December 9, 2010, Johnson was stripped of his Miss Gay America 2010 title for conducting business in contravention of obligations to the Miss Gay America Organization. Coco Montrese then replaced Johnson as the winner. In the same year Johnson was also stripped of the title of All American Goddess .

In November 2012, the US TV broadcaster Logo announced that Edwards was one of the 14 drag queens taking part in the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race . Edwards sang the We Are the World- inspired song Can I Get an Amen? , whose proceeds went to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Edwards was eliminated in the ninth episode, finishing in sixth place. As a trademark of Alyssa Edwards her so-called tongue pop established itself . She takes up this in her 2016 song Tongue Pop the Halls! on.

From 2013 to 2017, Edwards starred in the web series Alyssa's Secret for four years . In 2016, Edwards took part in the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars along with nine other drag queens and finished in fifth place. Also in 2016 Johnson was in a supporting role as Ambrosia Salad in the movie Hurricane Bianca alongside Bianca Del Rio to see. Two years later followed a renewed engagement in the sequel Hurricane Bianca 2: From Russia With Hate .

In October 2018, Johnson received his own eight-episode reality TV show on Netflix under the title Dancing Queen . The series primarily picks up on Johnson's work as the founder of the Beyond Belief Dance Company in Mesquite , Texas . In the same year he worked as a choreographer in an episode of the tenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race .
