history

The aristocracy , who represented the upper class of society until at least 1918 (the final fall of the Ancien Régime ), had private dance teachers because dance was one of the social manners . This profession was still practiced in the 17th and 18th centuries by traveling famous dancers and, for the less wealthy citizens, by the traveling people .

An outdated term for this function is dance master . There were permanently employed dance masters at large courts . The dance master not only had to teach, but also to arrange sequences of movements for parties and ceremonies or counter dances on balls. At the theater he was both the ballet master and choreographer . The designation dance master was used again in German theaters in the 1920s with the emergence of modern artistic dance to distinguish it from ballet master.
