William H. Hill

Wiliam Herbert Hill (born December 27, 1930 in Paris (Texas) , † December 16, 2000 ) was an American composer , conductor and music teacher .

Life

William H. Hill received his first music lessons at the age of four from his mother Audrey Hayes Hill. As a child he learned the saxophone and was a member of various school and community wind orchestras. In 1948 Hill began studying music at the University of Northern Colorado ; he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 and a Bachelor of Music in 1954, and in 1955 he temporarily completed his studies with a Master of Arts . Hill was also a member of the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and served from 1950 to 1953 as a musician with the 529th US Air Force Band .

In 1955, Hill became an associate professor of wind instruments and assistant conductor of the wind orchestra at East Texas State University ; In 1958 he took over the leadership of the wind orchestra. In 1963 Hill left Texas to study again and moved to the University of California, Los Angeles . For the next six years he taught and studied there; in the summer months he also gave lessons at Adams State College in Colorado and from 1966 to 1969 he worked as a saxophone teacher, arranging and as a concert band conductor at Arizona State University .

From 1972 to 1982 Hill worked at California State University . There he completely rebuilt the wind band program, which at the time consisted of just one orchestra with 27 musicians. He also headed the wind instruments department.

Hill composed not only for wind orchestra, but also for smaller wind ensembles, symphony orchestras and choirs. He was also an internationally sought-after guest conductor and speaker at concert band workshops.

Awards

In 1977 Hill won the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award of the American Bandmasters Association for his composition Dances Sacred and Profane ; In 1981 he was appointed a member. Hill also received the University of Northern Colorado's Outstanding Alumni Award and several ASCAP Serious Music Awards .
