Finis McLean

Finis Ewing McLean (born February 19, 1806 in Russellville , Kentucky , † April 12, 1881 in Greencastle , Indiana ) was an American politician who represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Finis Ewing McLean, son of Fergus McLean and Sophia Blackford, was born in Russellville on 1806. After attending local schools there, he attended the Lebanon Academy in Logan County . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar and opened a law firm in Elkton in 1827 . He was also engaged in agriculture at the time.

McLean decided to go into politics over the following years, so that he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1837 . He was also elected as a member of the Whigs to the 31st United States Congress, where he remained from March 4, 1849 to March 3, 1851. After serving in Congress, he resumed his practice as a lawyer, as well as agriculture.

In 1860 he moved to Andrew County , Missouri, and ran a farm there until 1865. He then went to Greencastle (Indiana), where he died on April 12, 1881. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery .

Finis McLean had two brothers, John and William McLean , who were also involved in politics. His older brother, John, was a member of the United States Congress, a US Supreme Court Justice, and a United States Postal Secretary. His other brother, William, was an MP for Ohio in Congress. Johns son Nathaniel McLean was a Union - General during the Civil War . Finis McLean was also the uncle of James D. Walker , who was US Senator for the state of Arkansas from 1879 to 1885 .
