Okolona is a small town ( Town ) in Clark County in the state of Arkansas the United States . At the last census in 2010 , Okolona had 147 inhabitants.

Okolona is located in the southwest of the state of Arkansas, about 90 kilometers northeast of Texarkana and 125 kilometers southwest of Little Rock near the Little Missouri River . The city is located at the intersection of Arkansas Highways 51 and 182. Eleven kilometers south of Okolona is a junction with Interstate 30 .

history

The first known inhabitants of the area around what is now Okolona were Native Americans of the Caddo . The first settlers of European descent came to the area during the 1830s and established a new settlement. The name Okolona was taken from the town of Okolona in the state of Mississippi , where the settlers originally came from. From 1833 there was a school in Okolona. In 1858 the village received a post office and several shops were opened in the 1860s.

In 1857 a new school building was built. On April 2 and 3, 1864, the Battle of Elkin's Ferry occurred near Okolona as part of the Civil War . After the civil war ended, Okolona slowly began to grow. At that time, the population of the village lived mainly from agriculture, especially from the cultivation of cotton . In 1871 the "Okolona Male and Female Institute" was founded in Okolona. In 1890 the local high school was founded.

In 1885 Okolona was connected to the railway network. The railway originally ended in the nearby village of Burtsell , but the residents of Okolona raised nearly $ 5,000 for the expansion. On November 15, 1902, Okolona was officially incorporated as a town. The railway line at Okolona became part of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1917 . In 1928 the city received a school for the African American population, which was merged with Okolona High School after the end of racial segregation in the 1960s.

The population in Okolona has been falling sharply since the 1950s. In 1940 there were 525 people living in Okolona, ​​compared to only 113 in 1990. Most of the residents left Okolona for nearby larger cities such as Arkadelphia . In 1973 Okolona was connected to the drinking water supply, and since 1982 there has been a volunteer fire brigade in the city. On July 1, 1987, the Okolona School District was dissolved and the associated schools closed. The school children from Okolona have since attended schools in the neighboring town of Gurdon .

In the 2010 United States Census, Okolona had 147 residents, spread across 65 households and 44 families. 78.9% of the population were white and 19.7% were African American ; 0.7% of the population were of other races and 0.7% had two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos also made up 0.7% of the total population. There were married couples in 55.4% of households, 7.7% of households consisted of single women and 4.6% of single men. 32.3% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them and 30.8% of households had seniors over 65 years of age.

The median age in Okolona in 2010 was 41.8 years. 21.4% of the residents were younger than 18 years, 7.3% were between 18 and 24, 25.8% between 25 and 44, 27.8% between 45 and 64 and 17.7% of the residents were 65 years or older older. 45.6% of the population were male and 54.4% female.

At the United States Census 2000 there were 160 residents in 70 households and 45 families in Okolona. 68.12% of the population were white and 31.88% were African American.
