Maximilian Franz Joseph von Berchem (born May 14 / May 18, 1702 in Burghausen , † December 18, 1777 in Munich ) was a Bavarian statesman. From 1745 until his death in 1777 he was Bavarian Minister for Foreign Affairs .

Life

origin

Maximilian von Berchem comes from the Bavarian noble family of the von Berchen , originally from the Rhineland . He was the son of Josef Cajetan Anton von Berchem, Bavarian government councilor, and Maria Magdalena, née Baron Cammerlohr von Weichering .

Early years and first offices

Maximilian von Berchem studied camera science at the University of Ingolstadt after attending the knight academy in Ettal . First in Straubing Council of the Knights banker to the government, he was in 1729 in Burghausen treasurer . In 1741 he became director of the army catering during the War of the Austrian Succession . In 1742 Maximilian von Berchem was appointed Real Secret Councilor . In 1744 he was an Austrian prisoner for nine months.

After the death of Emperor Charles VII Albrecht , Maximilian von Berchem became first minister under Elector Maximilian III in 1745 . Joseph . First of all, he successfully tackled the restructuring of the Bavarian state finances in order to avert the impending national bankruptcy. He relies on the manufacturing process . The fruits of this policy are: a. the Nymphenburg porcelain and tapestry manufactories there . At the same time, however, he is said not to have acted against the rampant corruption in the Bavarian administration.

His death coincided with Maximilian III. Josephs together, with which the Bavarian line of the Wittelsbachers died out. He was succeeded by Matthäus von Vieregg .

From 1759 he was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
