Political career

Matthäus von Vieregg was a childhood friend of the later Bavarian Elector Karl Theodor . In 1759 he was appointed commander of the par force fighters. He also held the position of head stable master . In 1776 he became conference minister . When Karl Theodor came to power in Bavaria at the end of December 1777, he took over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ; his predecessor Maximilian Franz Joseph von Berchem had died shortly before. Von Vieregg opposed Karl Theodor's plan to exchange Bavaria with the Habsburgs for the Austrian Netherlands . During the Bavarian vicariate , on March 1, 1790, he was raised to the rank of imperial count . He held the office of Foreign Minister until the Elector's death in 1799. Karl Theodor's successor Maximilian IV. Joseph dismissed him on March 12, 1799 and made his confidante Maximilian von Montgelas his successor. Thereupon Matthäus von Vieregg retired to Tutzing , where he died on March 2nd, 1802.
