Thomas Onslow, 2nd Baron Onslow (* before November 27, 1679 - † June 5, 1740 ) was an English nobleman and politician .

Life

Family and title

Onslow was born as the first and only son of Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow and his wife Elisabeth Tulse. He had an older sister and a younger sister. He was baptized on November 27, 1679 in St. Margaret's Church in the City of London . By contract of November 17, 1708, he married Elizabeth Knight, the daughter of a Jamaican merchant. Around 1730 he built the Clandon House in Clandon Park for his family . He took over the title of Baron Onslow of Onslow with the death of his father in 1717. This title again passed to his only son Richard with his death in 1740 .

Career

Onslow began his political career in 1702 as a Whigs Member of the English Parliament . There he took up the interests of the constituency of Gatton until 1705 . He then took over the representation of the constituency of Chichester until 1708 . In the same year he briefly took over the seat for Haslemere . Between 1708 and 1715 he was a member of parliament for the Bletchingley district and also took over the seat for Haslemere again from 1713 to 1714. In the period from 1715 to 1717 he finally represented the constituency of Surrey . In addition to his work as an MP, Onslow also held numerous official positions. So he was entrusted in 1715 as Out-Ranger of Windsor Forest with the care of the game in the royal park of Windsor . After retiring from Parliament awarded him the University of Cambridge to doctoral degrees . He also took over the post of Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and in 1737 was the first custos rotulorum of this region. In 1718 he was named Teller of the Exchequer for life. Onslow also got involved in business . He was a co-founder of Onslow's Insurance , which later became the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation .
