prehistory
Governor Daniel D. Tompkins was elected Vice President of the United States in November 1816 , so he resigned from his position as Governor of New York in February 1817. Article XVII of the New York Constitution of 1777 stated that "... as often as the seat of government should become vacant , a shrewd and prudent" freeholder "should be elected governor by a vote ... with elections always going to that The time and place should be held when the MPs are elected to the Assembly ... ”This meant, if a vacancy occurred , that the lieutenant governor did not succeed the governor immediately, but only succeeded the state until the end of New York's annual term State Assembly administered on June 30, and the successor was then elected the following April.
Porter did not run for governor, but the Tammany organization, which was hostile to Clinton, did. This distributed ballot in New York City in Porter's name , some of which were cast. For the Democratic Republican Party , DeWitt Clinton joined John Tayler .
