New York gubernatorial election 1777

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New York gubernatorial election of 1777 took place in June 1777. The governor and lieutenant governor of New York were elected .

procedure

The election took place on June 1, 1777, but due to the American Revolution it took some time to collect and count the votes, so the official final result was not announced until July 9. On July 11th, George Clinton accepted the election to governor of New York and immediately went to work, taking the outstanding oath of office as soon as he could safely leave his military command.

At that time there were no political parties , the Democratic Republican and Federalist parties only appeared in 1789, until then every candidacy was personal. Furthermore, the candidacies for the offices of governor and vice-governor took place independently of one another, ie one candidate could stand for election for both offices (running mates) . The New York Committee of Safety endorsed Philip Schuyler as governor and George Clinton as lieutenant governor.

Result

George Clinton was elected both governor and lieutenant governor. As a result, Clinton formally resigned as Lieutenant Governor and runner-up Pierre Van Cortlandt , then President of the Committee of Safety, took office.
