John Scheid
John Scheid (born May 31, 1946 in Luxembourg ) is a French ancient historian and religious historian of Luxembourg origin.
Scheid studied in Luxembourg, Paris and Strasbourg, where he obtained his doctorate ( Docteur de IIIe cycle ) in 1972 . From 1974 to 1977 he worked at the École française de Rome . He then became an assistant for ancient history at the University of Lille until 1983 . Scheid has been Directeur d'études at the École pratique des hautes études since 1983, specializing in “Roman Religions”. In 1987 he completed his habilitation in Strasbourg ( Docteur d'État ). Since 2001 he has been professor of “Religion, Institutions and Society of Ancient Rome” at the Collège de France .
Scheid has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1991 . He is a member of several editorial boards and was Vice-President of the Association Internationale d'Epigraphie Grecque et Latine. In 2006 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea .
Scheid focuses on the history of Roman religion and society. In particular, he has published several prosopographical works on the College of the Arval Brothers . For his work "La tortue et la lyre" (Tortoise and Lyre) he received the Prix Émile Girardeau 2015 at the Institut de France .
