Christian Mann (born March 17, 1971 in Heilbronn ) is a German ancient historian and chess player.

Academic career

Christian Mann studied Ancient History, Classical Archeology and Latin Philology at the University of Freiburg and the University of Perugia from 1990 to 1995 and completed his studies with a master's degree . He then worked for several months as a research assistant in the special research area 541 of the German Research Foundation “Identities and Alterities. The function of alterity for the constitution and construction of identity ”. He was then able to work on his dissertation from 1996 to 1998, funded by a doctoral scholarship from the Graduate Fund of the State of Baden-Württemberg . The doctorate took place in 1999 with the work Athlete and Polis in archaic and early classical Greece .

From 1998 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg. In 2005 he completed his habilitation with the work Der Demagoge und das Volk. Reflections on Political Communication in Athens in the 5th Century BC Chr. , And received the Venia legendi . A period of frequent relocation followed. In the 2005/06 winter semester, Mann was a visiting scholar at the Graduate College “Political Communication from Antiquity to the 20th Century” at the University of Frankfurt . In the 2006/07 winter semester, he was in charge of the Chair of Roman History in Frankfurt. In 2007/08 he was a visiting scholar at Brown University in Providence , and in the 2008/09 winter semester he was a professor at the University of Konstanz . From 2006 to 2011, Mann was a Heisenberg fellow from the German Research Foundation.

Since February 2011, Mann has held the Chair of Ancient History at the University of Mannheim . In 2015, Mann turned down a call to the University of Regensburg for a W3 professorship for Ancient History and accepted the University of Mannheim's offer to stay.

Mann researches the history of ancient sport, but also the political, social and religious history.

Successes in chess

Christian man bears the title since 1990, International Master in chess . He achieved the standards for this at tournaments in Germany, Budapest and in Gistrup, Denmark. He played club chess in his youth at the Schachverein 23 Böckingen , in 1991 in the 2nd league at the Marbach chess club . In the 1993/94 season he played for the first time in the German Chess League , for the Freiburg club Schachklub Zähringen , to which he belonged until 1996. He then moved to the Eppingen chess club , with which he played in the Bundesliga in the 1996/97 season and again since 2004 (initially as a regular player, since 2008 as a reserve player with individual stakes). In the 2003/04 season he also played in the French team championship for Cercle d'Echecs de Strasbourg . His Elo rating is 2439 (as of October 2014), the highest rating to date was 2470 from July 1998 to June 1999.
