Peter Hommel

Peter Hommel (born November 20, 1925 ; † July 20, 2012 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Peter Hommel was the son of the classical philologist Hildebrecht Hommel . He studied classical archeology and received his doctorate in April 1952 at the University of Heidelberg under Reinhard Herbig with a thesis on Roman figure gables. In 1952/53 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Then he worked under the excavation manager Gerhard Kleiner in the excavations of Miletus . Until his retirement in 1991 he was curator of the antiquities collection of the Archaeological Institute of Frankfurt University .

His son is the oboist Christian Hommel (* 1963).
