Adolf Heinrich Borbein (born October 11, 1936 in Essen ) is a German classical archaeologist .

In 1956, Borbein passed his Abitur at the humanistic grammar school Hammonense in Hamm / Westf. Together with the later classical philologist Christian Gnilka . from. Afterwards Borbein studied from 1956 to 1963 classical archeology as well as Greek and Latin philology in Bonn and Munich and was with a thesis on the subject of Campana reliefs. After receiving a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1964/65, he was a research assistant at Heinrich Drerup in Marburg from 1965 to 1974 . Adolf H. Borbein was a member of the central management of the German Archaeological Institute from 1977 to 2010 and was at times the president's representative. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and an extraordinary member of the humanities class of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . From 1978 to 2007 he was chairman of the Archaeological Society in Berlin for almost 30 years . He is editor of the Antike Plastik series and co-editor of the historical-critical edition of Johann Joachim Winckelmann's writings .

In 1996 Borbein received the Winckelmann Medal from the city of Stendal .
