Friedrich Wilhelm Goethert

Friedrich Wilhelm Goethert (born March 14, 1907 in Berlin , † January 22, 1978 in Berlin) was a German classical archaeologist .

The son of a jeweler studied classical archeology, classical philology and ancient history in Berlin from 1926 to 1931. In Cologne he received his doctorate in 1931 with the work on the art of the Roman Republic . After a travel grant (1931/32) from the DAI , he worked for the DAI in Istanbul until 1934. Goethert took part in excavations in Troy during this time . In 1937 he completed his habilitation with the work Studies on Copy Research . From 1940 he taught as a lecturer in Berlin and was active in archaeological research abroad during the war. In 1946 he was appointed professor. In 1948 he was given a chair at the newly founded Free University of Berlin , where he also became dean . Goethert's research focus was Roman art. His dissertation became the starting point for research into the history of Roman sculpture in the 1st century BC. Chr.
