Wolfram Hoepfner

Wolfram Hoepfner (born March 16, 1937 in Breslau ) is a German building researcher and classical archaeologist .

Wolfram Hoepfner studied classical archeology at the Free University of Berlin and architecture at the Technical University of Berlin . In 1965 he started working on Herakleia Pontike . A building history study for Dr.-Ing. PhD. He then became Ernst Heinrich's assistant . He took part in excavations in Alzey under the direction of Wilhelm Unverzagt , in Kerameikos in Athens ( Dieter Ohly and Gottfried Gruben ), in Persia ( Heinz Luschey ), Bithynia and in Kommagene ( Friedrich Karl Dörner ). In 1965/66 he received a one-year travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). From 1966 he also worked for the DAI in its department in Athens. From 1973 he was head of the newly established architecture department at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin and second director of the DAI headquarters. In 1975 Hoepfner completed his habilitation at the TU Berlin and was appointed professor there in 1980. In 1988 he accepted a professorship for ancient building history at the Free University of Berlin. Wolfram Hoepfner retired in the 2001/02 winter semester .

Excavations led the full member of the DAI to Greece and Asia Minor. With Ernst-Ludwig Schwandner , Sotiris Dakaris and K. Gravani he led the excavations in Kassope . With Schwandner, he also heads the research project “Living in the classic polis”. Hoepfner is regarded as a specialist in late classical architecture , especially academic buildings, late Hellenistic architecture and the topography of ancient Rhodes .
