Winfried Held

Winfried Held (born April 23, 1964 in Augsburg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Winfried Held studied Classical Archeology at the Free University of Berlin and graduated in 1991 with a master's degree. From 1992 to 1995 he was employed as a research assistant at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute . At the Free University of Berlin in 1995 he did his doctorate with a thesis on The Sanctuary of Athena in Miletus . Afterwards, Held was a holder of the German Archaeological Institute's travel grant in the Mediterranean region . In 1997 he became a research assistant at the Chair of Classical Archeology at the University of Würzburg , where he completed his habilitation in 2004. He then worked there as a senior assistant. In 2007/08, Held was Alfred H. Howell Chair in History and Archeology and thus Visiting Associate Professor at the American University of Beirut . Since 2008 he has been Professor of Classical Archeology at the Philipps University of Marburg , succeeding Hans Lauter .

Held primarily conducts research on ancient architecture, the archeology of Anatolia and the archeology of the Middle East from the Achaemenid to the Parthian period, especially the architecture of the Seleucids . He researches the Attic clergy on the island of Imbros and undertakes surveys in Bybassos and Kastabos on the Carian Chersonese within the Collaborative Research Center 1209 “The Hellenistic Polis as a Way of Life” .
