Ulrich Schädler

Ulrich Schädler (born March 24, 1958 ) is a German classical archaeologist and game historian.

Schädler first studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt before he began studying classical archeology, ancient history and prehistory at the University of Frankfurt am Main and La Sapienza in Rome . In Frankfurt, he was in 1989 with a thesis on Attizismen ionic temples of Asia Minor doctorate .

Since 2002 he has headed the Swiss Game Museum in La Tour-de-Peilz . At the University of Friborg in Switzerland he received his habilitation in 2007 for the department of cultural history of antiquity and the Middle Ages , where he teaches as a private lecturer .

From 1985 to 1987, Schädler worked on the excavations carried out by the University of Pisa in the Villa of the Quintilier on the Via Appia in Rome and, as part of the excavation documentation, comprehensively processed the history of the excavations and their finds, which dates back to the 18th century. Since 1995 he has worked for the Austrian excavations in the Artemision of Ephesus , where he has been documenting the findings on Roman games in particular since 2007 , but also on games from the Byzantine era. Schadler is a proven connoisseur of ancient play and leisure culture, on which he has been researching since the 1990s. Together with Ricardo Calvo Mínguez , he edited, translated and commented on the Libro de los juegos , the most important collection of chess problems of the Middle Ages , by Alfonso the Wise .

Schädler is co-editor of the international journal Board Game Studies and, together with Rainer Buland, editor of the Ludographie series.
