Achim Lichtenberger

Achim Lichtenberger (born December 12, 1970 in Heidelberg ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Between 1993 and 1998 Achim Lichtenberger studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History and Protestant Theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , the Roma Tre University in Rome and the Humboldt University in Berlin . He completed his studies in Berlin with a master's degree and received a scholarship from the graduate school “Anatolia and its Neighbors” at the University of Tübingen . In 2001 he completed his doctorate there with a thesis on cults and culture of the Decapolis . Studies of numismatic , archaeological and epigraphic evidence . In 2001/02 he took on a teaching position in Tübingen and in 2002 became a DFG research fellow and research assistant at the Chair for Old Testament and Biblical Archeology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . In 2002 Lichtenberger moved to Münster as a research assistant. In 2003/04 he was a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Cambridge and a Visiting Fellow at Fitzwilliam College . In 2008 he completed his habilitation in Münster with the thesis Severus Pius Augustus. Studies on the sacred representation and reception of the rule of Septimius Severus and his family (193–211 AD) and then became an academic senior councilor in Münster. From April 15, 2010 to 2016, Lichtenberger was Professor of Classical Archeology at the Ruhr University in Bochum and member of the board at the Center for Mediterranean Studies .

In 2016, Lichtenberger was appointed professor of Classical Archeology and director of the Archaeological Museum of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , succeeding Dieter Salzmann .

Lichtenberger primarily researches the ancient legacies in the eastern Mediterranean , especially Palestine. Herodian times are his specialty here. In addition, he deals with ancient numismatics , in particular the religious and political motives and possibilities of this medium.
