Dieter Salzmann

Dieter Salzmann (born April 6, 1950 in Bochum ) is a German classical archaeologist .

From 1969 to 1976, Salzmann studied classical archeology, ancient history , art history as well as prehistory and early history at the Ruhr University Bochum and the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg . He received his doctorate in Bochum in 1976 with a thesis on the subject of "Investigations into ancient pebble mosaics". He then went to the Mediterranean region in 1976/77 as a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1978, Salzmann became a research assistant at the Archaeological Institute of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . With the work “Portrait coins of Roman senators, knights and other historical persons” he qualified as a professor in Bonn in 1986 and then became a private lecturer there until 1991 . Between 1988 and 1991, Salzmann was a Heisenberg fellow from the German Research Foundation . In 1991 he moved to the University of Regensburg as C3 Professor , and in 1994 as C4 Professor at the Institute for Classical Archeology and Early Christian Archeology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . At the same time, he was director of the archaeological museum there until 2016 . Salzmann has been a member of the Expert Commission for the Assessment of Movable Ground Monuments since 2001, and since April 2007 a full member of the “Senate Committee for Art and Culture”. In 2015 he retired and was promoted to senior professor.

Salzmann is primarily concerned with ancient numismatics , in particular with the importance of coins as a mass medium in religious and political issues. In addition, he researches the Hellenistic residence city of Lysimacheia , where he carried out field research in the central settlement and the Chora , but also on the statues and reliefs from Zeugma and its surroundings and, since 1989, funded by the German Research Foundation , on the mosaics in Pergamon . Salzmann has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1991 and has been co-editor of the professional journal Boreas since 1995 . From 2007 to 2009 he acted as a scientific advisory board for the exhibition project "Imperium" in the LWL Roman Museum in Haltern am See .
