Hans-Volkmar Herrmann
Hans-Volkmar Herrmann (born February 18, 1922 in Rostock , † December 23, 1998 in Cologne ) was a German classical archaeologist .
After four years of military service and studying classical archeology, classical philology and ancient history , he received his doctorate in 1951 under Max Wegner at the University of Münster. Since 1952 he worked on the Olympic excavation. In 1953 he found the dedication inscription on a helmet fragment discovered in 1940 during a German Olympic excavation : MILTIADES ANETHEKEN TOI DI = Miltiades dedicated (this helmet) to Zeus. In 1953/54 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , from 1956 to 1959 he was a consultant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens, then assistant in Tübingen. In 1964 he received his habilitation there. In 1969 he became a professor in Regensburg, 1973 in Cologne, where he taught until his retirement in 1987. Until his death he continued to write numerous essays and contributions in compilations and encyclopedias as well as reviews.
Hans-Volkmar Herrmann was buried in the Junkersdorf cemetery in Cologne . Herrmann's estate is in the Cologne University Archives .
