The University Archive of Cologne (since 2016: Historical Archive of the University of Cologne) preserves the tradition of the new University of Cologne (since 1919) with its predecessor institutions ( Cologne City Commercial College , University of Local and Social Administration, Cologne, Rhineland Pedagogical University , Cologne Department ). The archive of the old Cologne University (1388–1798) is in the historical archive of the city of Cologne .

The university archive is a public archive and was set up on April 1, 1968 in the run-up to the university's 50th anniversary (1969). It belonged to the university administration from 1968 to 1973 and has been part of the rector's division since 1983 . It was run by senior archivists between 1968 and 2000 and has been managed by a senior archivist since then . Its holdings of 3.9 kilometers of shelves cover the period since 1901, including, in addition to administrative files, numerous legacies such as those of Ernst Boerschmann and Hermann Jahrreiß .

Due to the evacuation of large parts of the registries during the Second World War, the war losses are manageable; they mainly concern the documents of the medical faculty (especially doctorates before 1945). Nonetheless, files from the Rector and the Board of Trustees were destroyed before the war, especially in the area of student associations (association registers).

The Cologne University Archives also contain the documents of the Oberhausen Pedagogical Academy , which was dissolved in 1953 and which was handled by the Cologne Pedagogical Academy .
