Andreas Rumpf

Andreas Rumpf (born December 3, 1890 in Potsdam , † June 22, 1966 in Cologne ) was a German classical archaeologist .

One of the six children of the painter Fritz Rumpf (1856–1927) (the elder) and his wife Margarete Rumpf, b. Gatterer, who worked with numerous artists such as u. a. were friends with the painter Lovis Corinth . The father built Villa Rumpf in Potsdam in 1895 .

All six siblings, like the eldest daughter Gertraut, the eldest son Fritz Rumpf (the younger) (1888–1949) and the second oldest son Karl-Heinrich (1889–1914), died in 1914 in Lotz and the youngest son Andreas was already born introduced to art early on.

Life

Andreas Rumpf studied classical archeology with Franz Studniczka in Leipzig and received his doctorate there in 1915 with a thesis on the wall paintings in Veji . At the same place he completed his habilitation in 1923 with a thesis on the Chalcidian vases , a special group of black-figure ceramics . In 1928 he took over the newly established professorship for Classical Archeology at the University of Cologne , which he held until his retirement in 1960. In 1940 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

His estate is in the Cologne University Archives .
