Wolfram Nagel

Wolfram Nagel (born October 23, 1923 in Berlin ; † November 14, 2019 there ) was a German archaeologist from the Near East .

After serving in the war and as a prisoner of war (1942 to 1946), Wolfram Nagel studied Near Eastern Antiquity , Ancient Near Eastern Philology and Classical Archeology from 1948 to 1954 at the Free University of Berlin , where he was one of the first students to receive his doctorate in this subject under Anton Moortgat in 1954 . In 1955/56 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . From 1957 to 1971 he worked at the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Berlin, most recently as chief curator . In 1966 he qualified as a professor at the University of Cologne for Near Eastern antiquity. In 1971 he received the newly established professorship for Near Eastern Archeology at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne, where he taught Near Eastern Archeology until 1989. Nagel was married to the Near Eastern archaeologist Eva Strommenger .
