Joseph Wiesner

Joseph Wiesner (born January 25, 1913 in Liebenthal , Löwenberg district in Silesia , † November 26, 1975 in Lörrach ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Joseph Wiesner studied Classical Archeology , Assyriology , Egyptology and Ancient Religious History and received his doctorate in Breslau in 1936. In 1937/38 he held a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1939 he completed his habilitation at the University of Königsberg , where he worked as a lecturer until 1942, and from 1943 to 1945 as a lecturer at the University of Munich . Wiesner was a member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1942 . From 1943 he worked for the Jankuhn special command set up by the SS-Ahnenerbe , which confiscated prehistoric finds in southern Russia on Heinrich Himmler's order .

After the war he worked temporarily as a teacher at the Birklehof school . From 1949 to 1950 Wiesner was a regular associate professor at the University of Halle , in 1954 he became a lecturer and finally an honorary professor at the University of Freiburg .

Wiesner did research on religion and art history of antiquity , the ancient Orient and the Eurasian horsemen .
