Hans Schaal (archaeologist)
Hans (Johannes) Schaal (born March 28, 1888 in Thalassery (formerly Tellicherry) on the Malabar coast in India ; † July 19, 1963 in Bremen ) was a German educator and classical archaeologist .
biography
Schaal was the son of a missionary from Schwäbisch Hall . Since 1907 he studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Bonn and in 1912/13 at the University of Berlin. He was in Berlin to Dr. phil. PhD . After that he was a teacher in Schulpforta . In 1917 he married Annemarie Erman, the youngest daughter of the Egyptologist Adolf Erman .
In 1926 Schaal became director of the old grammar school in Bremen. From 1926 to 1929 he undertook several research trips to Italy and Greece . In 1932 he became a member of the German Archaeological Institute . Publications appeared on Greek vases and clay sculptures, among other things. In the time of National Socialism he had with the Nazis problems since his wife was the daughter of a professor with a Jewish grandmother. He adapted and was able to remain as headmaster. In May 1945 he was dismissed as director and returned in 1947 as a teacher. In 1952 he was able to undertake another research trip. In 1953 he was retired. He was then occupied with topics of antiquity .
